Happiness

This book I've been reading, by the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Tutu, called "The Book of Joy", a recently published best seller, recommends that if you're having problems in your life, feeling depressed, angry, lonely, brooding about the past, happiness and sunlight can come from reaching out and helping others, extending compassion, forgiveness for past wrongs. This seems to work- literally. At least for me. It's a little magical. Results in less anger, less depression. Why not give it a try?

Another good book is Being Peace, by Thich Nhat Hahn.

I need to start reading some of these books. My inner critic is beating me up.

Indeed! Actually I found it a little scary. As if reading the book had some sort of magical effect. At the very end of the book when Archbishop Tutu is getting in the taxi about to leave, the Dalai Lama puts his arm around his friend and says, "When I am dying, my last words will be of you." This struck me as such a simple, very human and very touching thing, coming from the religious leader of the Tibetan world, a Bodhisattva, one who on attaining Nirvana has chosen to return and help others.
As I have said, there is something rather numinous going on here. No ordinary thing and certainly these are not ordinary people, and yet again they are, at least they say they are.
