Newbie here

I'm new here. I just wanted to get a bit of advice about AA meetings. In recent days I have found myself thinking that I maybe wasn't as bad as I thought I was or that I will be able to drink 'normally' if I start again. I know rationally that this is not the case but I just wondered if anyone else had those sorts of feelings when they gave up and also thought that maybe I should attend AA meetings as a way of reminding myself of how bad it is when I drink. I have sourced an AA meeting in my local area but I don't know how to go about attending.

You can just show up. I'm not an AA person, but if you want to stop drinking, you can go to meetings. And, I think many people go through feelings of thinking, maybe I'm not that bad. That's the disease of alcoholism speaking to you. The level of denial that alcoholism brings us is phenomenal.

Welcome to SR Jimerson and congratulations on quitting

If you decide not to go th AA for whatever reason you can always read the threads here to remind yourself why you quit, some of them are heartbreaking

I suspect that most people on SR tried and failed at moderation before accepting that it hardly ever works. It does sound like your addiction speaking

Welcome to SR!

As far as AA meetings go, find one in your area, and just show up. At the beginning of the meeting the chair will usually ask if anyone is attending their first AA meeting. Be brave and admit that you are.

The group will probably segue into a "first timers meeting" where other people will share their stories about what it was like for them when they came to AA. You don't need to talk, just listen. At the end of the meeting several people will likely give you their phone numbers so that you can contact them if you wish.

Many people find their first meeting to be an uplifting experience, and for the first time in a long time they feel a sense of hope.

Good luck, and let us know how it turns out for you.

Hi and welcome Jimwerson - I think nearly everyone has had those thoughts that maybe they weren't that bad, or with a little effort thy could find an off switch and drink normally.

Glad to see you're rejecting those ideas and looking for help
