Day One Tomorrow

Hi all,
New to this forum stuff so not sure how it works. Tomorrow is going to be my first day of not drinking. In a long time. Any suggestions on how to get through? I work during the day so that's not an issue...just the habit of picking it up in the evening. Any help appreciated!

Come here, Hang out, read through all of the many forums here, make sure there is no booze in the house, write a recovery plan, make sure you eat something good, make some herbal tea, take a bath, go to bed...

Stay on this site, good food and exercises Perhaps AA? Today is my second day after a relapse. I know I am an alcoholic. One day at a time!
I am glad we are here and trying. Drinking gave me nothing but misery.
How long have you been drinking for? What quantities? Just wondering.

Hello and welcome.
You've found a great place for support.
First day can be rough. Have you considered an AA meeting? All you have to lose by going is a bad cup of coffee. It'll help fill the time when you would normally be drinking, plus, you might get something out of it.

I've had many day ones until I needed help and couldn't do it on my own.
you'll meet people just like you at AA, as you will here, and you don't have to speak or do anything besides listen.
It took action on my part to quit. Not just a change in my routine, but my whole life.
You're not alone and wishing you the best.

Welcome V. If day 1 is from long term drinking- perhaps see a doctor to carefully manage w/d's. Cold turkey can be unsafe- I had seizures. Prayers.

vodkover I was here every evening the first month. I change the route home so I didn't pass the store on the way home. I had an alternative drink ready in the fridge when I walked in the door. I ate a good meal first thing. Phoenixj is right though, get to a doctor if things go bad.

Welcome to SR Vodkover

Have something that keeps your mind occupied during the time you normally drink. Things like computer games are good for this

We want a drink but we don't need a drink so if you can occupy your thoughts the cravings are much shorter in duration and may not hit at all

Welcome Vodkover! Like saoutchik said, I would suggest having a list of ready to go distractions (something that you enjoy) to help with the cravings that will come up. This will help getting those thoughts of alcohol out of your head until those cravings pass. Also dumping out any alcohol still sitting around the house and avoiding places where alcohol is served will help.
