What's your size? New Year's Weekender 16 - 17
The idea of finding the right size sobriety took me by surprise. Sober is sober, is sober, no?
It's New Years and a time for signing myself up for those things I want to change in order to make next year my very best year.
Once I finally figured out I had a huge drinking problem I struggled. I heard so many messages. From make it 24 hours to folks telling me I can never drink again. Really?
What size sobriety is right for me? How big is this problem? Is it really as big as forever? How can I face New Years and say I will never drink again when I wanted a drink before the words were even out of my mouth?
Thinking small was all I could muster. Just today. Just get past 6 PM. Just take the alternate route home. Just stay home once I get there. I cannot even think in terms of years here. I am in pain now.
This New Years, when you are signing up for those changes we all make out loud or privately, think about the size sobriety that actually helps you stay sober. If a year is too big. OK. If a day is too big then that's OK too. Learning how to live sober comes in many increments.
Don't let this new year be so big it overwhelms you. Think in the size thats right for you. String together each of the patches of sobriety you are able to achieve. Together they will stretch farther than you can imagine.
Welcome to your sober weekend and Happy New Year weekenders! *Ring Ring*

Hi everyone!
Thanks Dee... Watership Down was the only book I remember as a child. I was so engrossed in it. I never read as I was not a good reader and it took a while to get all the words. But I read every word of that book. Good quote.

How is everyone doing? I was expecting a big snow storm and thats not going to happen. Maybe 1 - 4 inches. Baaa... nuthin!
Are you ready for the New Years? Any plans? I am staying tucked away here in Casa Del Kenny.
Everyone seems rather quiet today.
If you are new to the weekenders welcome. A simple "in" is all it takes to jump on the sober bus for the weekend ride. Or share how you are doing as well. Glad to have you aboard!
And what? No shotgun any more? Hmmm....

HAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
SHOTGUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
By default I claim it! Thanks for the starter post Ken!
I am in, this holiday hasn't been a big one for me, even when I was drinking. We always referred to it as Amateur Night. It's when you not only have to contend with those who would normally be out but also those who whip it up when they normally wouldn't. About the past 10 years or so I have been in bed before midnight. So this is not a trigger for me. However, I can certainly see how it would be for many. How many times do you hear "So, what are YOU doing for the New Year?" Well, I'm ringing it in the safe way, at home, probably continuing on my current binge on Netflix of Vikings if I haven't already finished it by that point.
Interesting post Ken, the size of sobriety. You're right, it's not a one size fits all answer. It all depends on where we are in the moment. There are times I'll give you a Garfield grin and say "forever" and then there's moments that I just don't want to think about it. Secure and safe. the mind still likes to play games. I think it always will, just fewer and further between bouts.
I've been given heck for saying this but hey, it helps me so I say so what. Although I never go out to celebrate my mind can't help but sway a few moments here and there to others who are out yucking it up. The payoff is when I open my eyes in the morning feeling rested, well, and ready to start the day and I think of those same people. I know, horrible and mean, but it reminds me why I don't drink.
I'll definitely be on this weekend. Everyone have a great day!

Hi joandmelandhan, HopeSprings, Cleomie, Winslow and madgirl!!! Welcome!
Ah Della! Love ya!
I think Gilmer tried to claim shotgun LB. But you said it out loud so you claimed it this week!
Good feedback LadyB. I can give both answers as well. Some days I am back to thinking small others I have nothing but open fields in front of me. Living sober allows these perspectives to be seen. Drinking everyday I never saw anything but blackness in front of me.
Slow cooker pepper steak for dinner.
