14 out of the last 15 days no alcohol. I went 7 days straight then tried to see if I could have "just a few". Nope. 7 more days no more beer.

I just now joined this site. I haven't been to any meetings or joined any groups before. I don't know if I can make it through the holidays.

Today I'm going to a cooking party at my sister's house to make cookies. We have always consumed a lot at those parties. One of my friends just asked me if I plan on drinking because she knows I've been trying and wants to know whether or not to bring any alcohol.

There's a pull on my chest.

You can absolutely make it through the holidays. You've proven you can make it seven days - just do the same thing today.

Keep saying to yourself, "I don't drink. No matter what."

If the cookie bake party gets too intense you can always leave early or take a walk to collect your thoughts.

It's a bit difficult for some people to be around alcohol in early recovery, so if you feel more comfortable skipping the cookie party this year, do that!

Welcome to the site.

Welcome! I'm pretty new here too, I just passed one month.

Hopefully your test in 'having just a few' made you realize that you can't, ever. With support you can stay sober, you just have to be completely committed to it.

I agree that being around alcohol when newly sober is very difficult. If the urge gets too strong, you really should leave. It's not worth undoing all of your progress from the last week.

Do you have plans to get support to stay sober?

Welcome to SR! You have come to the right place. It amazes me how caring all these people are. I have 66 days sober and couldn't have done it without SR. Just keep reading and if you have any questions they will be answered promptly. I know when I first stopped drinking and using I don't think I would have gone to any bodys home where there was going to be drinking. I had to stop completely or die. I might have lasted a couple of years .

Hi and welcome Matronymic

Joining this site was a game changer for me. I realised I wasn't alone and that anytime I needed help support or understanding all I had to do was read/post.

It might mean some tough choices in the short term but there's absolutely no reason why you can't make it through the holidays sober

It's so great to have you with us, Matronymic. This is the best place ever for encouragement. Glad you made it through the day. I prefer the dough too.

Their will always be times when you will go somewhere and people will be drinking.

My wife's friend just bought a house and my wife and I are going over there tomorrow with champagne to celebrate. Of course I will not drink any.

But that is the sober life. I can still congratulate her on buying her new home without putting liquor into my body.

Well done, Matronymic! That is a great achievement, changing your story like that. You can take part in your traditions and you can do it sober. In fact, when you think about it, you can do all of those things, and many more too, when you don't drink anymore. You can remember everything that happens when you don't drink anymore. You can be measured, respectful, considerate all the time when you don't drink anymore. You can wake up refreshed after a celebration, ready to start a brand new day, instead of deathly hungover, when you don't drink anymore. You can be proud of yourself and who you are when you don't drink anymore. There is a very long list of things you can do ONLY IF you don't drink anymore.

Sure, it's will be a challenge to make different choices. So what. You can do challenges. It will be hard. So what. You can do hard. Nothing can keep you from living a life with the good stuff in it. You can do this.

Keep posting, OK? Good to see you here.
