One Year Sober Today
Although I could probably write a book to fully express how I feel being a full year sober, how my life has changed during the past year, and share the sober highs and lows from the past year, I'll save that for another day. Today I just want to be accountable and relax with the peace of mind that sobriety has given me.
I will say this much to those who may be struggling to string a few days or weeks or even months together: be patient, it gets better, a lot better. The first days, weeks, and months were the toughest until eventually my alcoholic life was so far in my rearview mirror that I could only look forward, and most importantly, live in the present.
After joining SR, I tried hard but failed to truly get sober for nearly 3 full years. I'd get a few weeks or maybe couple months and then go on a binge, relapse and restart the clock. After 5-6 cycles of this pattern, resuming drinking for another full year, something finally clicked and I walked away, November 22nd, 2015, the end of a final swan song of a binge, that was it, it was over. I woke up a mess on November 23rd, skipped work, and once I finally sobered up, I just knew I'd met my match and I'd lost the battle for the last time. Something was different - I'm not sure how to explain it but I just knew that it was over and I had to change my life. So I did.

Like my sober wife says....let it go. Forget about alcohol.
Easier said for sure...but that is how she rolls.

You are an inspiration for me to go for that year again. Of course, I need to get through my first 24, then a couple days, weeks, months....
Life truly is better being alcohol free.
