New here - sick of being a "lush"
I've been saying that for years.
Just started reading a book written by a man who stopped drinking at my age (50) and it's really motivating me
Not sure exactly what my next step will be...maybe AA. Or other support. I doubt i can do it alone. 34 years of binge ( and now almost daily) drinking has quite a grip.
I think i have great exceptions to drink - chronic pain and illness, social anxiety, you name it.
Anyway..just wanted to post my first post.
Thank you

Hello and welcome! Lots of support here, lots of people with many years more than you on the bottle before they decided to stop. For me personally, it took 18 hard years before I decided I had worn out my welcome and ran up the white flag.
Welcome to SR! I am 45, and spent close to 30 years drinking. I have been sober for the past ten and a half months, which is the longest consecutive stretch other than pregnancies. Life has still thrown me some curve balls, but it has been much better.
Glad you are here!
Glad you are here!
DandB,
Welcome.
Seems 50 is a good age to quit. I quit at 50. So did my buddy. I quit 18 months ago...he quit 14 years ago.
Get through the physical, about a week...heal up a bit..about a month...deal with the brain damage...about a year.
Read and Post. Eat when you crave. Now is NOT the time to go on a diet. Work out.
Thanks.
Welcome.

I was going to say it's a good time to quit, but I actually wish I'd quit 35 years ago. The fact is, any time is a good time to quit.
What I can say D&B is while this will be a big, scary change to your life, you can and hopefully will find much, much better ways to cope with those issues you mention. While it may be hard to believe right now, alcohol was making all of those issues worse, not better.
Good luck on your journey to a better life.

Welcome DaB. 50 is a great time to quit. I'm 55 and joined up here in September. I'm now 26 days sober. I found a lot of advice and support joining the September group with others who are at the same stage I am at. I suggest joining the November group (to join just start posting).
