Could use some encouragement here

Hi there. I've been doing really well lately, but tonight I've had a very stressful situation develop, and I really feel like downing a couple drinks. Of course, I know this won't make my situation any better, but I'm needing some relief from my stress. I don't handle stress well at all.

Please, I would very much appreciate some words of encouragement from other SR members tonight. I'm not having a good evening, but I think your kind words would lift my spirits.

You'd be much better off with a hug than a drink. Drinking will only make things worse. Or go for a walk instead of drinking. Tomorrow you will be glad you didn't drink.

Read around and post here for a while--visit the arcade if necessary. Have you joined a class thread and the 24-Hour Club?

You can do this - you came here first, you identified a trigger and you are being honest. You are doing great!

Hi SoberLifeForMe! You can do this. Tune out to something funny on the internet. I like to look at videos by Ed Bassmaster on Youtube. That might take your mind off your stressful day! I hope so anyway. Also Simon's Cat is a channel I recently found. Brings a smile to my face. Hang in there!

I started to live a life that was beyond my imagination once I let go of the fantasy that a couple of drinks would set me right. Without that, it never happens. Not for me, not for anyone. There were new challenges introduced, and then there were older things I could much better have lived without that seemed to have dissolved into thin air. It takes time.

If you haven't done it yet, reach out for help and support. And then accept it whenever it's offered.

Hi, EndGameNYC. Thanks for your thoughtful words. I am reaching out for help here tonight. And I definitely know that drinking won't help. That doesn't mean I don't have the urge to do so from time to time (like tonight). Luckily, though, several times going through withdrawals are finally keeping me away from the booze. I can't handle any more withdrawals. Just having a tough night tonight. I know tomorrow will be better.

Meditation is great for gaining discipline of mind. Alcoholism is like a two year old saying, "but I want to feel good now!!" Think long term and visualize the negative consequences of drinking.

Recovery, to me, is a mental battle.

Hi, sorry you are struggling tonight, you are smart to post here when you are feeling that way. I have found goi g for a walk, getting myself involved in an organizing project, or just spending time here reading and posting helps with the anxiety/stress/cravings.

I also have found playing the tape through to be invaluable. Whatever stressor I am currently dealing with will still be there tomorrow. If I drink I will wake up feeling hungover, and in no state to deal with the situation. Sober, I have a sense of clarity, and can at least problem solve, and begin to take steps to review the issue.

❤️ Delilah

I thank you all for your words of encouragement. I'm going to bed now. It's way too late for me to be up, but my brain is racing. I have to get up early for work. It's going to be a tough day on not very much sleep, but I can handle it. Good night, wonderful SR peeps! I appreciate you all so very, very much!
