I'm an old lady too. I stopped by going to rehab. I'm now attending AA, have a sponsor and am starting the steps. I have my first addiction counseling session next week.

Do you feel you need help with detox?

I'm 60 and a young man , I find SR a Godsend to my recovery . AA will welcome you warmly too . Call your doctor for advice on stopping suddenly.

It took me a few tries to quit. I joined SR in 2012 and finally quit for good December 2015. SR is a great place and you will find a lot of support here.

I was able to quit without using AA but I think that is mostly due to the fact that I have such a great support system within my family and close friends. I leaned upon them when I first quit. Important thing is that it helps to have a good support system and I find that many find AA to be a very good support system.

Find another healthy "addiction" to fill your time with. For me, it was running and exercising. For others it might be something completely different. Try something new. It might be scary but I promise you it will be rewarding.

We are here for you!!

Yes, a doc's visit is a good choice to get started. Mine was great, and got me started in the right direction. Just saw mine last month for a nu-related issue, sore back, so I got a adjustment (he's a DO). He was so glad to see I was doing so much better.

It can be done at home. Give your doc a visit and let them know you plan on detoxing and they will prescribe you meds to get over the withdrawls if there are any. It's also a good idea to have someone around for a few days if you live alone just in case.

Butterfly, welcome and good for you for making this decision.

Talking to your dr is the best way to start. If you get his okay to detox at home, then you should be fine. We do understand how hard this is and we are here to offer support. SR is a great tool and you can access this board anytime day or night and there will always be someone around to offer support.

Butterfly - it's great to meet you.

I was older too when I knew I had to stop or die. I'm glad you plan to call your dr. I hope you'll stay with us & keep reading and posting here. I never felt alone once I joined SR. You can do it.

Welcome to SR!

If you are older, it is especially important to let your Dr. know you are trying to detox from alcohol. Better safe, than sorry!
