Checking In - Hi Guys

I survived my vegas trip and was thrilled to get through two very long dinners surrounded by wine without drinking. I felt great leaving Vegas - had my headphones on listening to REM "Drive" as I walked through the Venetian on my way out to the airport and I couldn't stop smiling.

We closed on our new house yesterday - whew. I also had some new crown work done at the dentist (terrified of dental work) and got through the shots, drilling and three hours in the chair without drinking that night (that would have sent me in a tailspin last year!)

Tonight driving home I was laughing at something and realized holy crap - I think I am - gasp - happy?!!

Sooooooo grateful I could cry. This site saved my life

Good job!

I feel badly for those whose work requires them to spend much time in settings where there is a lot of alcohol "for business purposes." And Las Vegas is not my idea of fun.

But you used the tools available to you and got through challenges. I hope that our newer friends take your example as one that shows we don't have to succumb to the pressure to drink -- or succumb for any "reason."

Nice job.

That's awesome. Surviving Vegas sober is a huge accomplishment. Your happiness is a result of your strength and self love! Had you have slipped it would be the total opposite. All these little signs show us we are meant to be sober! Happy for you!

Glad you stayed sober during your trip. I too am grateful for this site. I've found such strength and hope here. I give SR a lot of credit for my sobriety.

You're right Lucie, it is a huge accomplishment but I'm going to take it a step further, madgirl, and say you deserve the gold crown on this one. The fact that you made it through this shows a true force of sheer will and determination!

For anyone who has never been to Vegas for a convention consider this. When you take a personal trip to Vegas for the fun of it you have yourself and whoever goes on the trip with you to contend with when it comes to drinking. When you go to Vegas for a convention you have an entirely new set of situations to deal with. The workday is full, lots of meetings with existing and potential clients, but............when that convention floor closes for the day..............it's a whole new ballgame. Believe me, these conventions are held in Vegas for a reason and a large part of it involves alcohol. So, you don't just have your AV to contend with, you are now also dealing with a plethora of people who want to drink and who want you to drink with them. It's the "right" thing to do. It's probably one of the most brutal places you could be if your goal is sobriety.

So, madgirl, this is for you:

What you were able to overcome speaks volumes to your commitment. You rocked it!

Thank you all. Yes, the Vegas trip was certainly trial by fire. Working in a new industry creates a certain amount of anxiety, and sitting in a private room eating filet mignon with strangers while surrounded by windows offering full view of the venue's well stocked wine cellar was borderline comedic.
It was my personal quest.

Well done Maddie, that feeling is something else isn't it - loved reading this and now listening to 'Drive' and REM album I haven't listened too for years.

Thanks!! You guys are the only ones who get it

The experience of walking through the casino listening to "Drive" and feeling amazing while seeing all the tawdry lights, sad people and total sham of a place is one I will keep in my heart forever.

Being true to your best self feels soooooo good - oh thank God!! I know you guys understand.
