Cannot sleep!!!!

I am so, so tired. Only slept about 3 hours in the last 36 and I still can't go to sleep. My eyes are burning and blurry, my head feels funny, and still I can't sleep. Tried exercise, tv, no tv, counting backwards from 100, even singing Kum bah Yah in my head and nothing is working. 8 days without alcohol today. I know it will get better and really have no desire to drink--I just want some sleep!!

Congrats on 8 days sober! Sleep will normalize. Might as well try to relax and make yourself comfortable in the meantime. Herbal tea? Deep breathing? Guided meditation? Good book on audio?

There are some really good guided meditations for sleep and relaxation available on the apple podcast app. Try to get yourself into a comfortable position in a cool, dark bedroom, and listen to the guided meditation. If nothing else, you will get some physical rest.

Ele,

Being a bit cold is important. I like a fan on me in the summer.

Once you are sleep deprived, it is hard to get to sleep. I had trouble sleeping in the beginning too. You keep waking up w a jolt...it is horrible.

The best advice I got...

...478 breathing...Google it.

Also...only think about one thing....breathing...do not obsess over anything.

If you are religious. The Lord's Prayer and Hail Mary's work...

Don't be afraid to toss and turn....

That is all I got..

Thanks for the post.

Oh Sweetie, that IS rough..
I went 65 days with less than that and it stank. But this seems to be a bit rare.
This is NOT meant to be medical advice, but a decent dr. finally put me on Trazodone (early generation anti-depressant, non-addictive, not controlled, etc.) I was VERY skeptical, but it has worked for me. Many folks here say "no" to most all medications, but if I had high blood pressure or an infection I expect I would need something to help it.
Hugs.

Thank you all!!

I really appreciate all the kind words and advice. In the interest of honesty and full disclosure, I finally broke down last night and took a small bit of Xanax that a friend of mine gave me. I know it's not a good idea to mess with that stuff but I have never been much of a pill head and it really did the trick. Was fast asleep by midnight and slept until about 15 minutes ago. Maybe now that I finally slept I will be able to sleep without it tonight. Alcohol and pot are my DOCs and for now I am just grateful that I didn't drink or smoke. Hoping to have a productive day and will check in here often.
