Alcohol brain damage

I had a depression over a year ago with delusions after I stopped drinking.
I have been on multiple meds, and even ect therapy.Nothing has helped.I feel that I have alcoholic brain damage which has affected my sleep, appetite, and thirsti have been told I have a fatty liver, and or cirrhosis.
my memory is shot ,and I can't think right.
But most people refuse to believe it is alcohol related.I drank heavily for 40, years.
Thoughts?

I would advise seeing your doctor for a thorough checkup.

Hi and welcome hone

I think a lot of us underestimate the amount of time it might take to undo the effects of several years drinking.

I can only share my experience. I drank for 20 years. It took a long time for my mind to 'come good' but it did.

There was marked improvement after 90 days and then less obvious but steady improvement over the next year and beyond.

Welcome to the forum. I agree I would go to your docs to get some bloodwork done. That can check your liver and other bodily functions as well. If it is something else, then they can take further steps into diagnosing what may not be right.
Though the brain can take a long time to heal, especially after 40 years of abuse.

Ask you doctor to make periodic tests of your liver enzymes. Mine were elevated and I received the same diagnosis. But my liver recovered quite quickly. Yours may take longer. A good diet helps. And of course don't drink, even "moderately." It may take quite awhile until your body and mind gets straightened out but, if you don't drink you may be surprised at the eventual improvement. In my case little of the damage became chronic. Good luck.

There is no doubt i did damage. There is also no doubt that if we want to heal the only way is not drinking the poison that caused the damage in the first place. My memory is still really bad but its way way better than when I first quit. Stay the course.

Hone,

Folks need the meds, but I believe you can not assess how your brain and body are truly damaged unless you are med free.

I know it is impossible for many to be med free, if that is the case, stay on the meds but no booze any more.

Most here have drank their lifetime allotment. If we continue to drink, we go down hill.

are you in therapy or just not drinking now?

We drink for many years and somehow think that not drinking in a year or two reverses all that we've done to ourselves. I found that I needed to continue to stay stopped and to work on my self. I use AA and those 12 steps.

Thank you
I am not on meds,as they didn't work for me.I am not drinking, but am not seeing any improvement unfortunately.I almost think I have a form of wet brain.
I have no appetite,no thirst,and can't sleep.
Something changed in my brain over 20 years ago which also led to hoarding .

Hello
Yes This all started in March 2015.
A sudden depression, one ultrasound that confirmed cirrhosis, stopped drinking abruptly and had full blown delusions, psychosis.
A second ultrasound said fatty liver.
Doc would not believe previous cirrhosis finding from other doctor because my liver enzymes were fine.Even though I've read that many people have cirrhosis with normal blood tests.

Did the doc give you a list of side effects to expect from the ECT? That is a serious procedure. My sister had it for her Bi Polar and she lost a lot of memory.

Hello
At the time of ect ,I was too out of it to even know what was going on.I had delusions, and no meds were working. This all started when I stopped drinking.
I actually improved to where I could function minimally, but then I didn't progress.
Is your sister ok now?
I don't function properly
Not only mentally,but physically.
Med doctor took blood, and insists that I am fine ,even though I have physical symptoms of liver problems.

She lost a lot of memory that she hasn't regained. Do you feel like you are missing chunks of time? Did the delusionsame go away?

The delusions went away, and my family noticed improvement. But then nothing.
My short term memory is fine. And I can communicate,so people don't understand why I can't get better.
But long term memory is bits and pieces.
Shortly after ect,I forgot a whole weekend.

Welcome to the Forum Hone!!

Alcohol can be very damaging, but on the plus side the human body is a great piece of kit, given the chance it can try it's hardest at repairing!!

I think you have to accept where you are and keep doing the best you can. Obviously the past can't be changed, but it takes a very long time to completely recover. It sounds like you're doing really well! Lots of positive progress.

Work with what you've got. That's all any of us have.

Welcome to the forums.

Have you seen a specialist? If not that might be a good idea if you suspect something may be wrong. Usually they will do a ultrasound to check things out.
