Growing up. 4 years sober.
Growing up. 4 years sober.
Alcohol was my Fountain of Youth. It allowed me to feel young at concerts, parties, and bars - even when I was clearly the oldest guy in the room. Nothing wrong with a 34 year-old dude crashing a college party, am I right kids? Party on! Hey, look at me, drinking these young whipper-snappers under the table at the BBQ. Rock on, am I right?!!
Anyone watching from afar could see pretty clearly that this wasn't "cool", but rather pretty darn sad. In fact, I could have seen it myself if I wanted to - why was I the only "old guy" at the party? Where were all the people my age? The answer: they were busy growing up. They'd moved on to Act 2 while I was busy watching Act 1 over and over again and hitting the reset button when things got too scary.
Quitting alcohol is tough on you both physically and mentally - but perhaps nothing is harder than learning how to live like a sober, grown up adult. The great news is that it comes with rewards! Financial, personal, and professional rewards. Relationships. Travel. And when you finally learn how to HAVE FUN sober, things really get interesting.
If you're just getting sober, let go of the old scene. There's so much waiting for you in the next act. You might even find a real 'Fountain of Youth' that you've been searching for. I feel a heckuva lot younger today than I did 4 years ago. And I'm living and exploring a new life - not just replaying the same old tape. You can do it, too! No matter how old you are, you can start living again.
4 years sober today. Thanks to everyone here at SR who has helped me on my journey.

I just got back from watching some fireworks and still see some from my living room. (And hear plenty.)
Wish I could direct them your way, Big S, because four years is a seriously great accomplishment, one that deserves pyrotechnics!
Thank you for being a loyal friend to SR, one who is generous with sharing through example, words and support. You've demonstrated that it is truly possible to gain sobriety and build a new life in recovery. I learned that when I came here and your posts were among the first I read.
Big Congrats, Big Sombrero!

Inspirational post. I'm the same age now that you were when you got sober, and I feel like I'm on the same hamster wheel you were when you finally pulled the trigger on sobriety.
For me it's not crazy hard to quite the everyday drinking, it's the weekend party drinking that's hard. Everyone expects me to be the "life of the party" guy. Honestly, if I could just be that once a week party guy I probably wouldn't be here, but Friday night rolls into Saturday, then Sunday, and so on...until the next weekend.
Thank you for sharing. I needed that today.
