Ambushed -

But kept my cool.

I'm in the U.S. - and around 3:00 my boss comes to my office, grinning like a cheshire cat and holding a bottle of red wine. I guess in honor of the holiday weekend, the idea was to gather round with everyone and have a glass.

I just grabbed a water and said - you guys go ahead, I'm good. I didn't make a federal case out of it or anything. Everyone else (literally) had a glass, but I didn't feel awkward at all.

On the long, hot trek home (my commute sucks) I reflected on how the entire course of my weekend would have changed if I would have had that one glass of wine. In the past, something like that coupled with the prospect of a holiday would have sent me straight into the wine bottle all weekend - by Tuesday morning I would have been exhausted, sloppy, sick and generally freaked out.

Instead I am truly looking forward to a great night's sleep (working and life is tiring!) and trying to connect with people this weekend at the block party (La Croix are so much better in the 95 degree weather!)

Congratulations on your success!!! Being able to say no like that when ambushed can be a real test of your sober reflexes. Well done!

I can relate

I'm in the U.S. too. I had a mini freak out about this weekend's upcoming events and how I will be surrounded by booze. But something in me is staying strong, so I just have to ride the positivity wave. Like you said....who wants to wake up sick and miserable? Not us!!!! Here's to health, honesty, and true strength. Thanks for the post. It helps a lot to read this stuff and know we are not alone. Much love to everyone!!!

That's a great thing! It's good that you didn't share with the coworkers.

I've noticed the hordes of people buying mass quantities of alcohol today. Not for me. I bought more fizzy water and ice cream. It's hard sometimes but we can get past the weekend without drinking.

I remember being so tired from work. Come the weekend, I would "relax" by immediately jumping into the bottle/can.

One thing I almost never felt was well rested.

Well I mean even if the weekend doesn't feel as "festive" as in previous years, I'm good with that, totally. Clear head, more focused conversation, being able to pay attention to others in social situations instead of obsessing about the next drink and wondering if it's too soon to go get one - yeah.

I've decided if it gets to be a bit much and I start feeling the drunken tide overtake the groupthink, I'll hightail it back to my living room.
