New Guy

Well, I've decided to give this a shot. I've been drinking heavily for years, and an everyday drinker for 5 years. I've topped out at 1.75L of Vodka every 3-4 days. I'm on day 4 of not drinking and I feel ok. I'm a Healthcare professional (so I know what withdrawal is) and I'm not feeling any symptoms yet...yet. my mind seems to be pretty clear. I am exhausted however...not sleeping great. So far...so good.

Welcome to SR SHG! Congrats on making the decision to quit and get sober, you won't regret it. Glad to hear that you are keeping an eye on the WD potential and staying safe, I would guess you will be feeling better soon - the insomnia/exhaustion is common early on. As you also probably know it simply takes time for our bodies ( and minds ) to heal from all the damage we did.

Have you given any thought to how you might go about building a plan/program for sobriety? You'll find lots of information and support on how to do so here.

Welcome, and good job on Day 4 of sobriety.

It's great that you're feeling good and the insomnia is very common in the early days. As Scott mentioned, it's a good idea to have a plan in mind for your recovery.

SHG--being in the healthcare industry, what are your thoughts on Melatonin for a sleep aid? I use between 3 & 6 mg at night and it really seems to help me.

I'm interested to hear what others think about this natural supplement. Congrats on day 4--keep up the good work!

Based on the quantity and regularity, I would say if you don't experience withdrawals, you've dodged a bullet. Better to quit than to "push the envelope" so to speak. Welcome to SR.

I don't have a great plan in place...other than just quitting. I think I'm ready. I'm on day 5 and I don't have WD symptoms (I don't know how...I was drinking a lot). As my head is getting clearer, I started making lists (for everything). I plan out my mornings and evenings so I have "chores" to occupy my time. My son and I are taking a trip this for four days (leaving tomorrow), so that will get me through another weekend.

Day 8

No DT's...can't sleep, but I feel fine. Of course I want to drink at all times, but I haven't yet. By reading, I see that week 2 is harder after you get through the honeymoon phase...I'm optimistic, but we'll see. I felt ready and motivated to quit, so hopefully I have the strength.

Welcome! This is a wonderful place for support and information. Today is day 170 for me and it's largely because of this board.

Day 4 kicked my behind the most, physically, but it did get better from there. The mental stuff takes much longer, but you sound really grounded.

You can always ask for help if you're struggling; there's always someone here.

Good for you!

Welcome and congrats on 5 days! You've made the right choice... Withdrawal symptoms or not, I'm sure you have some healing to do. I think you'll notice some things are going to start getting better as a result of this, that you may not even be aware of. It's like when the brakes in your car are slowly deteriorating but you don't notice how bad they are till you hop in a different car with new ones. You have a lot of support here. You can do this
