I'm trying again to give up drinking

Every 4 or 5 months I try to give up drinking, not had a drink for 20 hours. Im really tired of waking up every morning trying to piece together the evening before.

Welcome to SR, John. Great to hear that you are giving sobriety another try.

Do you have a face-to-face support system or a plan?

My plan is to come on this forum, read books and watch DVDs at night, I don't drink in the day as at work but get through 2 bottles of wine and cans of supper strength beer every night

Welcome John.
It sounds as if you have a plan for your time. An important thing for me is not letting myself get bored and start thinking about drinking, so sometimes it is imperative that I have something planned. Also it is great to have this forum to come to when the AV starts its nasty yapping. Even if I don't post all the time, I definitely read -- sometimes I do searches and read old posts too. There is such a wealth of real information here.
I wish you the best ..... don't worry about the 8 days in thing, worry about today each day and it will take care of itself.

Welcome John!

The links that Soberleigh posted are a great place to start.

SR, especially the January 2016 class, have been my biggest supports. I have also had many day ones, and this past NYE I decided I was done. Accountability for me was huge, so checking in on SR daily. I never drank during the day, rather wine at night (never just one glass.) It was really important for me to have things planned for nighttime, I went for walks, the gym, took the kids somewhere, read, bubble baths (yes, that might be a girl thing.) I just knew that I needed to have something planned.

I am closing in on five months and still check in here throughout the day, partly for my own accountability, and partly to check on others. Reading posts about successes and stumbles helps me continue to refine my recovery plan. It is also nice to be able to offer support to others. I have benefited many times from the kindness/concern of SR members.

Spend some time readin and posting. Looking forward to seeing you on SR!

If you are "really tired of waking up every morning trying to piece together the evening before" your drinking is way over the line The problem is going to require more than the distractions of reading books and watching movies. That's my opinion anyway.

Almost every time I see the word "try" in a post, the way you've used the word, I get a bad feeling. It's usually associated with an individual who has not made a firm commitment to stop. It makes me feel really bad for the individual because it typically means that they're going to go through that whole process of withdrawal least one more time. Withdrawing from alcohol is it painful process, and I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

I suggest that you stop thinking about trying to quit. Try praising the problem in terms of the decision and not an effort. Say to yourself I am going to quit.

At that point it would be worthwhile to adopt a plan for people whose drinking was as serious as yours is now. Adopt a plan that has worked for a large numbers of people. Give yourself the best chance of success. Personally I think your best chances are in AA. Go to one meeting and see what you think.

I also believe you need to have some sort of VERY strong plan in place before you reach 8 days. I sincerely hope this is the last time you ever go through alcohol withdrawal.

You've already gotten some good advice.
I second the idea about day 8 if that's the day that seems to be your Achilles.
SR is a good place to start. Keep posting and let us know how you are doing.

I'm glad you're here, John. I had to try a few times before I finally admitted there was nothing in it for me anymore. What had once been fun & relaxing was just bringing me misery & danger. Only bad things came of it in the end. You can do this! It'll feel great to be free.

Take it one day at a time and persevere! You can do it. In my own experience sobriety gets better and better. Those early days are no doubt the hardest, but if I can do it so can you!
