Side benefit
I was just thinking and I believe I have saved roughly $1500 not drinking. I was not a bar guy, but I probably spent about $200 month on alcohol. I guess it does really add up over time.
Yep. For me it was never a good enough reason by itself to get sober, but saving money is definitely a nice little bonus. I was mostly drinking cheap box wine alone at home the last couple of years, so I'm probably also in that $150-200 range in monthly savings, but back in my heyday when I was going out to the bars every night, I bet I was spending at least $1,000 a month and probably closer to $1,500 or even $2,000. I know I sure stole a lot of money from a lot of people who trusted me to pay for many of those nights out. Shameful stuff. Glad I don't have to live that way anymore. Recovery really is a better way of life.
Jeff this is one of the tangible benefits of recovery isn't it? I have been putting aside $100 a week since I became sober. That $100 is meant to cover the previous purchases of at least seven bottles of wine a week and two packets of cigarettes. It'd probably cost more.
Anyway I've saved it faithfully, we've made some great purchases including a holiday, concerts, theatre and other things. I just calculated that I've saved $16,000 since 9th March 2013!
