Day 1 and beyond
Hello.
I'm creating this thread as a place to post updates without having to create a new thread every day.
Day 1:
Struggling today but will make it through. I went to a A.A meeting this morning and will be going to another one tonight. I have plans to have dinner with my girlfriend's family before the meeting. May or may not be beer at the table but the meeting should help me to be positive again.
Considering picking up white chip tonight but this is a very large meeting and there would be a lot of eyes on me. (not something I enjoy) We'll see though .. sometimes I surprise myself.
This is the same meeting (the one tonight) I had a problem with last Wednesday due to the fact every speaker talked about God and not much else. But .. when I really reflected on how I felt about it .. I realized that most meetings don't just talk about God the entire time. Perhaps this is a chance for me to practice tolerance. I heard people talking about God a little in this mornings meeting. I decided I would not get mad inside like I usually do .. I just simply realized that once they stopped talking about God they'd say something I can relate to, or the next speaker likely would.
Thank you everyone for the support ..

Glad to hear that you are giving AA another chance, Grendhar. I, personally, haven't attended AA but many here (with varying religious beliefs and some with no beliefs) have found it beneficial.
Good luck tonight.
Good luck tonight.
Keep it up. Then as soon as you know it you've put together a string of meetings. I wasn't about the AA life either, but I can say it has changed my views and my life all around. Granted the people I'm dealing with (sponsor and the person that sponsored him) are really carrying me along. I know if I can do it being someone that was completely against the religious aspect of AA you can do it too and stay sober. I'm still new in my sobriety, but do whatever it takes to change your life from a living hell into something you can enjoy each day you wake up.
Good luck to you!!
Good luck to you!!
Congrats on Day 1 Grendhar.
It's been said before and I have heard it many times as well regarding, not just AA but any organized program to stop the insanity and this is...
"Take what you need (from the program) and leave the rest".
Admittadly, I have a problem with some aspects of AA ...but I'am OK with the God thing.
It's just whatever works for you...but dont write it ALL off so quick. The other people in those meetings need YOU just as much as YOU need them.
I'am glad you decided to go again. That shows commitment to your sobriety plan and thats a good thing.
Hope this helps.

Well done Grendhar for picking yourself up so quickly and moving forward again.
On the subject of taking what works from different approaches, from your other posts I really think it might be an idea to do a bit of reading about AVRT as well (some great threads on that in these forums). Not to replace what you're doing now at all, going to meetings is clearly helping, but just because you seemed so mystified about how you ended up drinking even though you knew it was a bad idea. I bundled together a few methods to get sober, but the ability to visualise my addictive voice as coming from a separate, more primitive, part of my brain, and being able to recognise the tricks it would use to try and get me drinking, was really helpful for me. Might help you as well. I also found Allen Carr's How to Control Your Drinking useful as well, to help me reject a lot of the arguments my AV was making for why a drink was a good idea. There may be a bit of "this is the only method that works" or "that other method is rubbish", but try and just ignore those bits. I personally don't care where ideas come from, if they work for me.
