Thumbs up Valentines Day Support thread

I know that for some of our members Valentines Day is not particular a happy date on the calendar - for others its a day where the temptation to drink to celebrate may be strong....

Post here if you need support or need reminding that you're awesome

Lets make it a sober Valentines day

D

Happily single empty-nester, with two dogs and four cats.

Oh, I've got plenty of girlfriends. Lucky for them, none of them know about it.

I once worked with a woman who was in an abusive relationship. I knew from the start that, as with many people, explanations and interpretations would not be therapeutic for her, and I'm not inclined to use such "techniques" when conducting psychotherapy anyway. Not only did her boyfriend criticize her, hit her, and blame her for everything that was wrong in his life, but he also neglected her with the exception of those rare times when he was "nice" to her in order to prop up his own self-image. One day after he'd beaten her up the previous evening, she came in to see me and gushed about how he'd sent her flowers that day to "make up for (aka, for her to forget about) last night."

I said to her, "He really went out of his way for you, going to 1800flowers.com and entering the numbers on his credit card." She responded, "Yes! And he took time out of his day to do it!"

There are worse things in life than being alone.

This is definitely a great thread Dee, thank you!
I'm returning home on Sunday from this wonderful vacation I've had visiting my parents in FL. I have a feeling that the guy I've been seeing will not have anything planned and I have to let go of any unrealistic expectations for this Hallmark holiday. I need to make my main focus about learning to love myself and staying sober. That NEEDS to be my priority as hard as it may seem.

I am at a stage in my life where I enjoy my own company and would rather be single than lower my standards.
V day used to be rough before... not so much the single ones but the ones where my ABF would be pissing runk or when my cheating significant other snuck out to see his hoochie.
I think it was more painful to have my partner(s) not meet my romantic expectations which were shaped by the commercial Hallmark Vday $$machine$$ than just sitting home alone with a pizza and a good movie.
