Hi Elizabeth and welcome to the site. This is a good place to turn for information and support.
A good first step would be to make an appointment with your doctor. He or she can give you a thorough check-up and possibly provide you with some medical assistance to help you through the detox phase. Not everyone needs that, but only your doctor would know if you do.
Have you ever tried any kind of face to face support like AA or SMART Recover meetings? They are also good sources of information.
You can do this, it isn't always easy but it is entirely possible. Read around the forum here, you will find many inspiring stories.

I'd start by getting a new doctor - at least one that has experience in treating addictions. At any rate, you can begin by talking about your problem albeit with a spouse, friend, pastor, doctor, etc. Depending upon your dependency, you can try to lick it by yourself. That takes a conscious effort to replace bad surroundings, people and habits with good surroundings, people that will lead you away from the temptation and a regimen of activities that will move you to new activities not based around your dependency.

Hello and Welcome to SR. There's lots of ways to do this but they all need a plan on how to get, and more importantly, stay sober.

I was sober 3 months and shortly relapsed because I couldn't deal with the emotional roller coaster that I learned that came a little after sobriety(p.a.w.s)but I can tell you drinking does not solve anything thats what I always kept in mind, even though alcohol aka poison was my choice of drug and the buzz and drunkenness I thought relaxed me even though I was waking up hungover, drowsy and at times a little shaky ,I was so much better without the booze, alcohol doesn't make anything better,I hope everything goes well and you stick with sobriety,I was feeling crappy for the last couple of days but everyday that goes by I actually feel a litt better, trust me drinking is not worth it
