seems small

I've got an ear infection, painful, but I'll be fine soon.
Because of this I've seen a doctor and nurse practitioner twice each over the last few days. They have both been right up close, digging around in my mouth, ears, feeling my neck. All through these examinations, I was feeling, well wow, this is so different. A year ago I would have been so paranoid they could smell the booze (and course they would have!), I would've felt ashamed, smelly, dirty and unable to take myself and my condition seriously, I would also probably have been sweating out fumes for England! I could imagine I would've left the room without having listened to advice or even without medication.
As it is, I could have a proper examination, knowing I didn't smell of anything and I could make confident eye contact and communicate what's going on and listen.
Seems a really small thing, BUT I know you guys will understand that it's not actually, it's big.
Be well all of you.
xx

Yes, I get it! All of these seemingly small things add up to be an incredible gift with our sobriety.

I hope you feel better soon

You can have reasons, or you can have results, but you can't have both.

I get it completely. It's wonderful when I don't have to fear the wafting fumes. I can do anything fearlessly. Drive my car, talk to co workers, go to the doctor, talk to other parents at my kids school.

I hope you soon get some relief from the ear infection.

Actually, it is a huge thing and not a small thing. Does a whole lot to building the self-esteem that we whittled away when drinking. I found myself from time to time turning my head away from people and keeping a distance when I first got sober, just out of habit and often laughed at myself, but it was a laugh of contentment. Keep up the good work. All the small benefits are actually huge as we started from the bottom of a deep hole.

Warning! Do not breathe near open Flame!

Good for you. These are the things when thrown into the sober pond create a beautiful lake. Stand up straight, look others in the eyes and breath on them.

Simple, fabulous sobriety..........

Great post!

wow, Soberwolf, sounds awful! I'm told I should be feeling a lot better by the weekend and as I can actually remember the conversation this time, that's what I'm hoping for.
Thanks all of you, I knew you'd get it. If I'd said this to somebody without our experience, I'm sure they'd just scratch their head.

Oh boy do I get it. Did not have any medical treatment for years because that meant I couldn't drink

True, so true.

Hope you are on the mend -- ear infections are the worst.
