Prescribed Adderall Use - Am I Really In "Recovery"

All,

Today is my one-week anniversary of being booze-free. A small accomplishment, but an accomplishment nonetheless

I do have a question.

I have ADHD and am prescribed Adderall. School came easy to me and I was able to get through college and law school without any medication (last minute all-nighters did wonders for me). Work, however, is a whole different ballgame. I tried to get by without any medication but I got in whole bunch of trouble at my first job because I was always late completing the assignments.

So, I finally decided to seek treatment and I've been taking Adderall for the past 2 years. I take one 20mg pill from Monday - Friday and skip the weekends.

Can I really consider myself to be in "recovery" if I am taking Adderall (a mind-altering drug)?

If you're taking it as directed and not taking it recreationally, I'd say you're still sober.

I agree with Least. As long as you have been honest with your consultant / doctor / GP in order to get the prescription; and you are taking the medicine as prescribed, then you are okay.

Have to agree with the rest of the folks here - if you are taking a prescription medication as prescribed by a doctor to help with a medical/psychological condition that's the purpose of the drug. Many of us find that our drinking was masking other issues and there are lots of folks who take medicine to help with those issues via a doctor or a psychologist/psychiatrist.

Congratulations on your week sober and that is great accomplishment.

As others have said, it's a prescribed drug given to you by your dr, so yes, you are in recovery.
