new and needing direction
hello...whomever is out there...obviously i'm new here...and don't really know what to do or say. a great friend of mine gave me this link and i'm looking for help in controlling my alcoholism...it's not an incredible problem, but one that is bad enough that I am looking for help. not sure where to begin.
Welcome to the family. It's good that you want to get sober. The longer you let it go, the harder it is to quit. It takes a bit of effort and time, but is worth it.
I hope the support here can help you get sober for good.

Hi Dean,
welcome to SR -thanks for your patience
Not sure if you were looking for the chat room or not?
These are the forums - not as real time...you will get a reply but it probably won't be instant at this time - lots of people are either asleep or in bed.
When you say 'looking for help to control your alcoholism' do you mean looking for ways to cut back and drink 'normally', or are you looking to quit once and for all?

Welcome. SR is a great resource. Read around the forum. You just might see yourself and your drinking problem in a bunch of them. A lot of sober folks here, myself included, can tell you that quitting and staying quit is possible.
How is alcohol manifesting itself in your life?

LOL no worries - refreshing the page is something I had to get used to as well
What kind of responses are you looking for Dean?
How to get started?
Seeing your Dr is often a good start - if you've been drinking for a while,. Detox can be rough for some of us.
Outside of that a lot of people use meeting based recovery groups like AA or alternative groups like SMART or lifering. There are book based recovery methods like Rational Recovery too
Other see addiction counsellors, and some do inpatient or outpatient rehab.
Some just use sites like this - SR certainly helped me get sober and stay that way - there's a lot of support and encouragement here - if you have a specific question, just ask away Dean

mainly looking to cut back and not quit altogether, but it quitting is what I need, then I must. i'm looking for help now...just...help. i'm alone and it seems at times my drinking is out of control, but when I can focus on it, I can seriously control it, be a DD, be responsible. I want and need that in my life. I feel lost at times and find myself drinking way too much.

Hi,
First: Welcome!
Yes, we're out here although many will be sleeping. I'm still working on sobriety, but here is my take:
1. You can't control alcohol, only stop it forever.
2. It might not be an incredible problem now, but it will progress.
3. If you read the stickies at the top of the forum you'll find a ton of information that is useful.
4. There is no right way.
5. Come back here and read and write often.

I never had success with cutting back and you won;t find too many proponents of that idea here.
I tried for 20 years Dean - but everytime I drank, no matter what my intentions were, the results were always the same.
Alcohol and I were toxic together.
The only thing that really worked for me was not drinking alcohol at all.
It's a massive change to begin with - but I've never regretted it - my life really is awesome now & and I genuinely love being sober

If you have to control your drinking, it's already out of control.
This is a site for sobriety. So you are unlikely to get a lot of support about going the route of moderate drinking. We all tried it. But we all had to figure it out for ourselves. You said you'd quit if you needed to. One way to determine that is to quit for 90 days, or even six months. A lot can be learned from the struggle.
