Never blacked out?
Hey secret chord, depends what you mean?
I used to think black out was like 'pass out' but it's not.
I've heard it from people that I was this place doing that - usually something out of character but functioning completely normally to outside eyes...and I'd have absolutely no memory of it at all.
If you haven't experienced that you're lucky - it's incredibly wise to get out of the cycle before you do.

I never blacked out. I was an alcoholic, no ands, ifs or buts.
The greater concern is that you're looking for a rationale that would allow you to drink again.
I can't believe I'm still looking for that rationale, that loophole, that way out. I thought I was past this stage. Ugh. Thanks for calling me out.
You're not shackled to not drinking, you're free from drinking

Another one who's never blacked out, except once when my "friends" bought me 21 shots of Jack Daniels on my 21st birthday. As you've heard, just because you never blacked out doesn't mean you don't have a problem with alcohol. You don't need to label yourself as an alcoholic if you don't want to.
I know a lot of people would say "oh, that sounds like a pretty lame excuse."
However, there is data to back up disconcerting aspects of the drinking culture in Wisconsin. I'll try to see if I can find the series the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel did a few years ago. It's excellent.
There's also the unrelenting power of the liquor lobby in Madison. Earlier in my career, my work brought me to the capitol frequently. There, the Tavern League was known as one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.
All that said, everyone has challenges. It just means that the external world in your life is one of them, but it doesn't mean you need to give it power. One huge recommendation: Stay out of the bars.
You can do this, Secret Chord. It gets better.

Acceptance that alcohol was causing me problems in my life was what opened the door to the solution.
There's always going to be others that drank more, had more divorces, more DUIs etc etc, we just have to get real about, is alcohol really working in our lives?
That was the only question I needed to ask!!

I've blacked out so many times I've lost count. Pretty sure mine was a combination of lack of food and speed drinking. When I was well and truly drunk then I would allow myself to eat. Not that I remember half of that!
The times I didn't black out were when I was pacing myself and eating. Also I have a low body weight which doesn't help.
I'm only only day 9 but I know what you mean, I'm bargaining with myself still..looking for the loophole!!!

I didn't always black out when I drank, but there are large chunks of my life that are missing due to my drinking. We are all affected in different ways, it's really up to us to decide when the bad outweighs the good and accept our problem. And you don't have to wait until you lose everything to make that choice
