Christmas party tonight- need my sober warriors to strengthen my sober muscles!

Hi,
Just checking into the site so I have accountability and can get some good solid sober advice from all of you! I am about 13 months sober and feel pretty strong. I go to AA but didn't make a meeting today. My husband's work is having their black-tie big party tonight. Lots of alcohol and fine wine with dinner. I attended last year when I was 3 weeks sober. So, I know I can do it again. But that AV still wants me to celebrate with alcohol on special occasions. So, I am going to take all of you with me tonight and hear all your sober voices telling that AV to shut up! Appreciate any wisdom and advice to help keep me strong. Thanks in advance to all of you. I love SR!

First of all, congrats on 13 months! That's amazing.

Holiday parties scare me too... but you've got this. Especially going to your hubby's party last year at only 3 weeks sober. That must have been pretty scary. Keep SR close and check in often to keep the AV under control.

Again, great job on 13 months.

Hi, mlp!

Great job on 13 months sober.

AV just loves this words combo - "special occasion". And it pulls out every card from its sleeve to make us feel deficient if alcohol is not part of a "special occasion". BS.

There is nothing "special" about alcohol, even expensive wine - the same "specialties" year in and year after. What is really special - is to gave guts to see through all the smoke of old-ingrained beliefs and see "poison= destructive force". What is truly special - ability to enjoy an event shifting focus from getting buzzed and drunk to noticing something new, getting new perspective, engaging in interesting conversation keeping a clear head. That is so special that beats all the pathetic AV's' cards with one mighty "Flash SoberRoyal" - " I am free".

Have fun and if AV starts bugging you - look left - here we are, look right - here were are again.)

Have fun. Enjoy the event.

Congrats on your sober time.

If the AV gives you any trouble reflect on the gains of the last 13 months. All that is through you being sober

There is no such thing as one drink or 'a night off' for us - but that doesn;t mean you can't have a great time.

Enjoy

When there is drinking involved I always drive separately and my wife knows I will be there until I'm not.

6 years down the road I still guard my sobriety like my life depended on it because it does and I never ever underestimate my foe.

Have a great time, and enjoy your sober night out! Tomorrow morning, you'll have no regrets with what you said / shouldn't have said and no hangover. Priceless!

Well done on 13 months.

Think how great you'll feel waking up the next morning after the party, no hangover and a head full of memories rather than regrets. No worries about what you might have done or said. Alcohol is a chemical delusion. You can do this!

thanks for all the kind words and advice. I got through the party just fine with no desire to drink alcohol. ( just my cranberry and club soda!).
It was interesting being able to focus on the good food and savor every bite and not worrying about if enough wine would be served at my table.
I also had conversations with a couple intoxicated people and ,to say the least , it was not a pretty site. It felt so good knowing that I wasn't one of them. Again, thank you everyone for such great suggestions and advice.

Well done on 13 months. Whenever i have to go to events where I am basically the only sober one, i think of how bad of a hangover i would have the next day, always scares me enough to not cave in!
