first time posting
Hey all .
First time I have come to ask support , but this battle with alcohol has been a losing one for me for too long.
I have had success in the past and managed to stay sober for 8 mos. But obviously have turned back to it.
Last weekend I blacked out (something I haven't done in years) and it scares the he'll out of me. Fortunately enough I was surrounded by people I trust but it still embarrassed me horribly.
Anyway I know there is no magic lamp I can rub to make it all stop but hopefully there is some help for me here.

welcome tatersalad...
if you want to quit and need support, this is the place to reach out to for help...
ya know, you're gonna have to start filling your glass with ginger ale when you go on stage now.
Seriously though, if you really want to quit, you can. You have to be 100% committed to it. And accepting that you can't drink in any manner is the first thing to understand.

Well Dee74
I have joined a gym and it has helped keep me focused. I'm sure it will test me getting through the holidays...... kind of why I decided to join in the first place. Wanted to go into the rest of the holidays with some extra backup

Welcome tatersalad. My recommendation is to work with your friends/family and get a plan of action in place. Mine is to go to counseling (first of 6 sessions tomorrow), I am going to an AA meeting once a week. I am shaking up my daily routine to get healthy and insert activities at normal 'drinking' times.
I finally acknowledge that I am a binge drinker and cannot control/moderate myself - therefore, I need to stop drinking totally.
It is not going to be easy but I want this more than anything.
You can do this.

You can do this.
A recovery plan needs to address the problem of not drinking anymore.
This is a very useful link that may help illustrate what I mean

It's been my trend to withstand the urge (a few weeks or so) and then WHAMO! I'll talk myself into thinking I have it under control and thinking I can just have a beer or two and stop. Sometimes I can if I put my mind to it but but sometimes I can't
Posting here regularly helped me beat those rationalising thoughts
we also have a support thread for all those quitting in November.

There's no need to wait, but I'll start a December one in a day or so

Welcome Tatersalad. I just started posting here and am am on day 2 after several failed attempts. I think with the support and accountability here I have a better chance at making it stick.
I too want to get back in shape. I used to lift or run almost every day but haven't done much in the last year...hmmm maybe why my drinking escalated. When I am fit and in shape I don't want to waste the extra calories on wine. Also who wants to workout with a hangover? Maybe we can motivate one another!

Welcome tater. There is a lot of information and great people willing to support you here, but ultimately staying sober is something only you can do. Joining the gym is a great step and I go to the gym regularly myself, but there is so much more to do. We are going through the same thing and I wish you the best!
One thing that helps me when I am having cravings is to keep busy...fitness is so good for ya!

Thank you all so much it truly is a relief to talk to some people that understand what I'm going through . usually I just get the response "well you don't drink anymore than I do you don't have a problem"
