Woke up...

I woke up in the LA County lockup
Eight or ten thugs and me
Pounding headache, retching body heaving
They don't give you anything for that
In the LA County lockup

I woke up on the floor of a cell
Somewhere north of the 45th parallel
Memories of some officers
They were kind enough
Glad nobody's hurt

I woke up sick and writhing
On the morning after my arrest
It was Germany, 1990-something
A twenty-something kid
These things happen, right?

I woke up a thousand times
Trying to remember what I'd done
What had I said
How'd I get here
Why were they all so angry....

I woke up to the misery and shame
I woke up to the fear and loathing
I woke up to the despair
I woke up to the nightmare
I woke up and tried to drink it all away....

Couple years ago, I woke up a different way
Can't really recognize that guy today
Cause I woke up and stepped forward and I decided
Don't wanna wake up like that no more
Woke up and started to change who I'd been before

This mornin' I woke up, 5am
Got dressed, had coffee.... proud of who I am
Grateful for all the goodness in life
For all the help I got along the way
For the man I am, with help, Today

I woke up, when I opened my eyes
I woke up, stopped believing the lies
Got honest, got help, made friends and change
And now I'm blessed with a whole new life
Time to wake up, sweet child of the stars....
