Letting go of fear reaction

I am 2 weeks sober today !!! yipeee .

I wanted to mention a lingering troublesome symptom that I have been experiencing .

Tight scalp and face tingling with tension type headache .

After careful examination I have been told these symptoms are being caused by acting fearfully , pulling up shoulders and scrunching jaws together . Its as if I hadn,t let go of the rotten feelings of withdrawal fearing they would never go away , feeling stuck in the fear almost . By acting like this I have caused the neck muscles to spasm which apparently stretches right over the head and face causing the sore scalp feelings ( imagine one of those rubber swimming caps on your head all day ) .
As a health anxiety sufferer you can imagine how relieved I now am at this diagnosis .
GP prescribed diclofenac , neck stretching exercises , long walks and no alcohol of course .

Im eating much better but sleep still a bit iffy .

Take care all

Thanks , I see this as residual anxiety which will fix itself out with time .

Hi Tam, it is probably all the pent up anxiety coming out, as you said.
If you have the time and money I would really recommend going to see a qualified personal trainer, not physical therapy, but personal training with the goal of getting stronger and more fit. Explain to them what is going on and they will start of slow with exercises to loosen you up, then moving to exercises that will build strength in your back, shoulders and core, which will help.
Some good beginning exercises for the neck and shoulders are to nod "YES" 20 times, nod "NO" 20 times and then go shoulder to shoulder 20 times. YOu should never make circles with your neck (although it feels good to do it is counter-productive).
Good luck, that is a pain for sure!

I had bad TMJ with that type of vise headache about 10 years ago. Then got to point my jaw just wouldn't open, anxiety coupled with teeth moving into a bad bite even after braces as child . Anyway, one visit to acupuncturist opened my jaw, relieved my headache. It was unbelievable! Then had to do the metal mouth braces again to fix bite, but acupuncture is amazing for relieving any body tension. Used it again after car accident with bad whiplash, got my neck moving again. I'm a total skeptic by nature but when I try more "Eastern" or holistic approaches, I'm usually pleased with results!
