Onward and upward....
I'm feeling very determined today. I made the decision last night that today I'd try again. I have drank copious amounts of beer/wine almost every day/night for the past 6 or 7 years.
I've managed to quit for a few weeks at a time, but to date, I'd always gone back to my drinking.
I think part of the reason that I've gone back is the emptiness that I felt once I gave it up. All of a sudden, there were SO many hours in a day and I chose to spend that time wallowing and missing drinking rather than doing something fun, calming, or productive.
I think I'm in a better head space this time around.

Welcome to the Forum Bookfreak!! 
I found it tough when I first tried to quit for the same reason, soo much time on my hands, sitting bored and thinking about drinking.
But then I realised that Sobriety is more than mere abstinence, it's about changing up our lifestyles, new routines, new interests, new projects, revolutionising our lives into what we now want to be, and that in itself will fill many of those newfound hours in the day!!

Welcome to the forum bookfreak! Might I suggest you spend some of your new found free time reading about recovery methods and knowledge here and in the various books in the recovery literature? There's a thread or sticky with the various well known titles. Cheers!

Becoming and staying sober involves work and often many changes to fill the hole left by not drinking, some call it living on lifes terms, not ours.
In the beginning I didn’t know what I didn’t know and needed to become teachable and that’s tough when an alcoholics ego is involved.
The teaching came from going to a LOT of meetings and accepting that I cannot drink in safety, EVER.
I did not like that because…………………………… but the pain and misery of drinking got me to see what was happening a lot clearer.
THE THING ABOUT SOBERITY IS THAT ONLY THE PERSON INVOLVED CAN DO IT FOR THEMSELVES.

It's great to meet you, bookfreak. I was drinking every day when I found SR. After joining and posting, I calmed down & felt less anxious about quitting. I had thought I'd be losing something - missing out. Instead, I reclaimed my life. You can too.

I had the silliest conversation/stress attack with myself tonight. I was freaking out about what I was going to drink now that I've made the decision to give up booze. I was actually stressing out over it before I gave my head a good shake. In my panic, I hit up the grocery store for bottles of sparkling juices and waters....as if that was going to replace booze for me.
I know it'll get better. You guys are amazing. Thank you so much for the warm welcome.
