Why is this so hard to beat?
Just a short rant about drinking & what it has done to me & the ones I love..like I've read a few min ago the cravings are very hard to beat..but when I know I've done the drinking on a certain day I hate it but I do it anyway. Why? It's a monkey on my back that I've got to kick..I'm now about 5 days w\o a drink & I wont lie..i want one evn a small one.. But i dont do small drinks so I'm staying away from the liquor store & praying to have control over it..but only the good Lord is helping me now..ty for this site so grateful for all!
Welcome skips! Day 5 is great, and good for you to post before you drink! Try to eat something, go for a walk, deep breath, anything else, don't give up those 5 days! It's very hard, but can be done, there are so many on this site who have been through this, remain sober, and can help us get through the early days!!
First of all, congratulations on those five days. Those are so tough. And good on your for thinking through the drink. You're right that it would not be one small one. When I tried to have a small one it guaranteed a second and third until I was drunk.

Thoughts are easy to control when you know where they're coming from.
What is the reason for your cravings? What is the reason for the reasons you have cravings?
Follow that chain of thought back far enough and you'll find yourself dealing with something that is relatively simple (assuming you know yourself well enough to get back this far, that is) and easy to undo.
Most people can't do this, but if you can, you'll find that you can do anything.
Never discount chemical factors.
Our brains are just greedy organic machines that fiend on certain chemicals.
It will guide your actions to fulfill it's needs.
This is why some people are more prone to addiction than others, because their brains find that alcohol is an easy source of certain chemicals.
Of course, some people are more impulsive than others.
Some people will feel this urge, but repress it because they know that in the end it's not worth it, based on society's rules and not their own experiences.
Most alcoholics are impulsive people, that's why they became alcoholics.
This same characteristic will make it more difficult for these people to truly give it up.

Glad ya found us. Reminds me of a few things ive read in a book:
the most powerful desire to stop drinking is of absolutely no avail.
The fact is that most alcoholics, for reasons yet obscure, have lost the power of choice in drink. Our so-called will power becomes practically nonexistent. We are unable, at certain times, to bring into our consciousness with sufficient force the memory of the suffering and humiliation of even a week or a month ago. We are without defense against the fist drink.
For me the" why" of it all was simple: because im an alcoholic. Its one of the many things an alcoholic can do.
Now onto solutions. Do you want to stop drinking?
Id suggest stop kikinin the monkey and kill the bastaad.

Welcome to SR, Skipsgal76. Remember that you don't have to take that first drink today no matter what, and as long as you don't take the first then you can't take the second or third or sixth or eighth drink that would almost always follow. Wishing you the best today...
