This one is going to stick

It's only been 10 days, and my first two posts here were wet ones. I've been around this block so many times that I just know that I have a strong sobriety ahead of me.

I have made plans and set goals. I'll be 64 this year and I'm going to do something I have wanted to do since I was 21. Start in Guatemala and backpack south to southern Peru. About 3000 miles. Before it snows here.

The alternative is to spend another winter in this cold, dirty house, work part time, and spend all my grocery money on booze and cigarettes.

If I pick up that first drink, these plans will never happen

I'm on this forum morning and night. Thank You all for being here.

Welcome, Thom7! You've got some fantastic plans there, both the strong sobriety and the trip.

Te deseo mucha suerte, Thom. Just giving your Spanish a test-run before you head off to Latin America. ;-)

No such thing as "only" ten days sober. Ten days is amazing.

I think that backpacking trip is an awesome idea. Wishing you the best and hope you'll continue to check in regularly here. Build those accountability muscles!

Sounds like an adventure, will you be doing it alone or with other people?

Delfin: first stop is a Spanish school for a couple of months. I haven't used my Spanish for thirty years and my Spanish sucks.

Blueberry and sva777: I usually travel alone, but you meet people on the road that you end up traveling with.

I get high just thinking about this. So happy to be sober and in control again.

Awesome goal!
Keep a map/globe/pair of dirty hiking boots in plain sight around the house to remind yourself what's at stake
Welcome
