After 3 and a half years in the bottle...

Well, I think it is finally time. I lost my brother and cousin in a car wreck. We all worked together, played together... And it is still hard to cope with it, but cope with it I must. I have a family and business to run. I can't say that drinking didn't help to cope when I was utterly destroyed by this event, but it took a life of it's own after awhile... So, it's time to make a change.

welcome!

using alcohol to cope is a pretty common theme for a lot of us.

I'm glad you recognize it's not a sustainable answer.

you've come to a good community.

My youngest sister was killed by a drunk driver when I was already sober, and that was just 13 months after my dad died. Thankfully I had been sober long enough that I didn't have to drink over those losses, although that was still my first thought; instead I kept close to my recovery program and worked through the grief. I was also able to offer what support I could to my mother and my surviving sister.

I think drinking would have prevented me from recovering from those losses and I'd still be struggling with them.

Welcome to SR; this is a good place for information and support!

Very sorry to hear about your brother and cousin. You've lost two people that were close to you, don't let alcohol take you as well. I wish you the best.

Willbilly, so sorry for your losses. I sadly can relate..lost my only bro sudden/tragically as well. Honestly alcohol only made it worse surpressing the grief so i'm hoping you can ride out the grief part w/out it.
