Was once told that the site can "time out" if I take a break before sending, or write a long post.
Anyway, at the very least (short posts), I copy the lines to the clipboard before hitting a button.
For longer posts, I open a Word Doc. and copy/paste it there until I know it has posted to the group.
If I'm pretty sure the site has 'timed out' (or there is a good possibility), I'll copy to the clipboard and then hit the Refresh button before pasting the info back into the window.
For long posts (and sometimes even before I finish them), I use MS Word as a back-up.
Many of us learned the tips-n-tricks the hard way first.
However, it has been very long time now since I lost a post and didn't have a back-up. 
Please don't lose heart, and give it one more go when you have time.
