Wet Spots #2

Sorry for the first post something went wrong

Once upon a time there was an alcoholic named MIR who was 3 months sober. He got invited to a very exclusive party with free drinks. He thought to himself I got this alcohol thing licked. What could go wrong?

To be on the safe side I brought people with me that knew of my sobriety and I drove separately.

To make a long story short I did not drink but I had a total melt down panic attack and I have never had a panic attack before or since.

The moral of the story is going to that party was by far the dumbest thing I have done in sobriety. I had no business being there and if it were not for the precautions I took I would have drank.

There are a thousand ways to celebrate the 4th and none of them involve drinking

Happy Sober Birthday America!

I too have tried running before I could walk.

I'm glad I laid off the social engagements for a while and built up my sobriety muscles

I actively avoid bars and other drinking situations, but...What if your home is a wet spot?

There's alcohol in my fridge all the time. I've had to learn to navigate it as best I can. Not easy sometimes.

My house is dry so unfortunately I can't offer any ideas other than that question sounds like a great new post

The positives from this sound to me to be:

1. You didn't drink
2. You realize that it was a risky situation

So it's ok to see the positives :-)

Love it!

One of the most frustrating things for me is to see a freshly sober person set themselves up. Why invoke that misery?

Sobriety can be as good or bad as you make it out to be. Make it great and be present for the holiday. Drinking is not required. Challenging your sobriety isn't required either.

There are a few other things I learned as well. The logical part of my mind said I wouldn't drink but put me around a bunch of alcohol and my drinking brain almost won. I simply cannot trust myself around booze. Although I have had a few 24 hours I still avoid drinking situations. Every once in a while I will dip my toe in the water if it is something I really want to do but I have built wonderful life that has nothing to do with alcohol and I love it.

I had to change. I had to junk my old life and find a new. I had to admit defeat and know that every time I went toe to toe with alcohol I got the snot beat out of me. Today drinking situations are a battle I choose not to fight

As long as we are spiritually fit and have a good reason for going.......but that does indeed take time, imo.

Recently over memorial day I attended an out of town wedding booze fest. I came on here posting my concerns ( was sober almost a year at that point) and got some great responses. This help polish up my sober helmet and shield prior to the event and made me accountable. For me that is a huge part of building those sober muscle friends talk about.

As Dee then replied - these types of events help cement (when we are ready to attend them) our commitment to sobriety. He is correct, I had the same experience.

Thanks for the thread MIR!
Today is Independence (from alcohol) Day!!!

I've been to a few booze laden locales and events in sobriety... And I didn't drink.

But I take precautions, I prepare, and I only went because I had some good reason.

Each case has shown me that I really prefer to avoid those situations.

The world has much to offer and many of those offerings involve no alcohol!

Well done getting outta there with your sobriety

For me, I believe that it is not only a matter of how much sober time one has but also the head space one is in before putting oneself in a situation where alcohol will be a'flowin'. Glad you stayed strong

No it happened 5.5 years ago but it made a huge impression and is one of the major influences on my present sobriety.

Thought it was a good reminder for a traditional drinking holiday

Yeap, sometimes we want to rush Sobriety not being the most patient of creatures, but we must slow things down to really make Sobriety stick!!

Great post!!
