You don't need a PhD in psychology to attend to the suffering of other people. A simple act, such as listening to another's pain, offering your seat on the bus to someone who looks like they could use a rest, saying "Thank you" to someone who seems to have only done what most people would do, or should do...The world's a better place by virtue of our being in it. Perhaps the best within us is captured in three simple words: "You're welcome."

And a big shout out to Neferkamichael. Your flowers for people -- whether they're celebrating a milestone or need a kind gesture during a hurtful time -- are an act of generosity.

Durring my first year of sobriety some very wonderful men took me by the hand and sometimes by the scuff of the neck. They guided me through the mine field of early sobriety. They listened to my BS and gently and not so gently pointed out where my thinking was flawed.

They lead by example and even in my alcohol pickled mind I knew I wanted what the had. They gave me the gift of sobriety and that is a gift I will spend a lifetime trying to repay.

If I can keep one person sober for one day then my life has meaning and the wreckage of my past was worth it.

Although I certainly learn from people with long term sobriety I learn more from newcomers. They are the life blood of recovery

And mecanix, a dear chap if ever there was one.

Yes, nef's flowers are a powerful sight to behold, and touch the heart every time.

Joe Nerv, rockin' old timer!

And some who I think are no longer here or only sometimes (?) - Nonsensical springs to mind. JDooner. And - assuming Terminally Unique is a guy (?): an absolute legend, almost immortalised in those profound AVRT threads from a few years back.

MesaMan - always out there in amazing wilderness places, and sending us back inspiring pictures and stories from his journeyings. Inspiring, not just for their own content, but to remind us that being sober for a time means we too can get out there on this great planet, go places, see stuff, not be stuck in a tiny closed room.

GerandTwine - no nonsense, almost clinical precision about AVRT over on Sec Connections. I haven't always agreed with you GT, but honour how you keep an eye out for people needing help with the grittiness of the technique in ordinary life.

When I first joined SR, I was two months, plus a couple days, sober. But the going was getting tough.

Like many, I spent my first week here practically camped out on SR.

BigSombrero, your posts resonated with me deeply. They were just what I needed at a time I needed them. Thanks for being one of the great guys here!

There are also a lot of great guys whose "SR homes" are on different forums and they tend to hang there. Thanks, to two more great guys of SR: Advbike and Ornithology.

Our venerable wpainterw - William. 80+ y.o. I believe, and with a lifetime of experience. A true Elder, in all the best senses. Look out for his posts, peeps - they're not regular but always gently wise and to the point.

To be included in that group humbles me. I feel like a steaming pile most days. Just trying to keep on.
