Ready to stop alcohol. What I should expect now?
Hi all! I am a 55yo woman, drinking wine at night for 20 years. A few glasses to start but now it takes the whole bottle. I was in deny for years, thought I was in control for a few more years but now, I have to face it, I am alcoholic and I need help to quit. I talked to my regular provider and he told me to quit and gave me sleeping pills, right... I tried to stop by myself but I realized that I have the will power of a jelly fish... Now I feel a little anxious, I am always tired, my whole body is hurting, I feel dizzy most of the time and I don't sleep well when I don't drink enough and when I drank too much.
I have my first apt tomorrow with a psychiatrist. I am ready to face the music but I am very worried about the withdrawal symptoms. What should I expect and what are the best meds to help me? I don't want to be knock down, I am working 5 days a week and need to stay alert. Thanks!

Welcome to the family. Here's a link of what to expect from withdrawal from alcohol. Many doctors give short term meds to help the withdrawal anxiety. Perhaps you could ask your doctor?

I think some level of physical discomfort can be expected.
Speak to your doctor, like Least mentioned. Best thing is yank the plug asap, and if you have someone living with you, advise them of your decision, so someone can make sure you are ok.
Quitting is usually the somewhat easy part. Staying quit is when the work starts and reaching out for support critical.
Wishing you the best

Thanks, I am expecting a few rough days. I will ask medication to ease that pain, any recommendation based on your own experience? I read a lot about it and I am getting lost in all medications and side effects.
Nice to have you with us Goldenwine. You'll find lots of support here.
Stopping the drinking will be somewhat uncomfortable or may well be nothing at all. It certainly will not be painful and you may experience just insomnia. That is probably why to Doc gave you the sleeping pills.
I would strongly suggest you take no drugs while still drinking ESPECIALLY sleeping pills. Stop drinking first!
We dont ask or give out "medical Advice" on this site and I may be "toeing the line"...but our concearn is for you and your safety.
Come back often. Read and post and let us know how you're doing. We care !

Very happy to meet you Goldenwine.
I was older too when I'd finally had enough & decided to get my life back. In the end, I was completely dependent on it. It was becoming dangerous. It feels wonderful to be free. You can do this - we're here to help.

Thanks Hevyn, I am totally dependent on it as well. I am ready for my visit with the psy tomorrow. I am hopeful but yet, terrified about what will be the road ahead. Thanks for your kind words!
