Really need to do this

So I have been a binge drinker since I was 16. Now I am 26. My drinking has become progressively worse over the years. It started with me missing work or having to vomit every five minutes on the job. Then I ended up losing a job. I got arrested cause I ended up in a strangers house not knowing where I was. Last year I fell whilst drunk and broke my elbow. The past two years I have been sleeping around a lot. Then this year I got raped. I have spent money that I needed for rent. But I even continued to drink after all that. It is only now that I am fully realising the extent of my drinking problem and its terrifying. I feel like if I continue drinking I will end up dead but I dont know how to live without drinking. I am so scared. This is the only place I can get support right now because I am too ashamed to admit the extent of my problem to family or friends. God I hope I can do this. Day 1 sober.

I'm really sorry you've been through all that Poppy.

You;ll find a lot of support and understanding here tho - I know it's frightening but this is a great community to be a part of

Welcome

D

I'm struggling with alcohol too and I am 3 days sober. I've tried to quit over the past few years but have failed. I support you and am confident you can live a very happy and sober life.

Welcome to SR, Poppy87. There are thousands of folks on this website who drank just like you who can attest that there is life without drinking. Please read and post often, there is a ton of great wisdom and support to be found here.

Welcome. You never have to be ashamed here. Post as much as you want, ask anything.

I know I was right where you are a few months ago. I knew alcohol was going to kill me but didn't know how to be sober. I read the forum for hours a day and it really helped me figure out what to do.

Good for you for getting on this at 26.

I am also 26 and on day one. Your story sounds a lot like mine. I am feeling so low right now and feel like I'm wasting a beautiful opportunity (life). I know I can live so much better than this. It's become a huge part of my life and I almost don't know how to live without it. But it's possible. I am excited for this new change. You got this, and hit me up if you ever want someone to talk to who can relate. I sure wish I knew more young people in who really want to sober up. Maybe we can help eachother. Good luck, Charley

Hi Poppy,
Congratulations on making the choice to try and live sober. What about a recovery program in addition to SR to help you stay sober such as AA, Rational Recovery, etc.? I think live social support is a key ingredient in helping to keep people sober.

Thanks so much everyone. I can't tell you how good it feels to have this kind of support. I have never been more afraid but I now feel I can face this. Thanks again.

Welcome Poppy,

Try not to think too much about living without drinking. Rather try and think - I will not drink now. I will not drink today. It is much easier if you break it into baby steps and it is not so overwhelming.

Cheers,

ZAB

Have you thought about talking to a doctor about your alcohol problem? You may need to talk to someone about your rape. Hope you find life after alcohol a lot of people on here have.

Lots of love and luck to you. Your experiences sound grim, but you are here and wanting change. Bay steps sounds great advice. xx

Hey Pop, very similar age to you and I found it very hard to admit my problems to my family, friends and healthcare people. I promise its worth it.

The people on this site are also very supportive.

Take care

Welcome poppy ......congratulations on choosing sobriety ....... My motto is nothing good ever happened when alcohol was involved. I didn't win the lottery, I didn't get an A, ....etc.
