Cinco de Mayo

Didn’t feel like cooking tonight. So we went to our Mexican place for dinner. Not even realizing it until we was there, tomorrow is May 5th – Cinco De Mayo. It’s become another day when people in America use the date as an excuse to get drunk. It’s the new St Patrick’s Day only with tequila and Mexican brand beer. I saw marguerites advertised for 5 bucks for tomorrow. I’m sure all over there will be tequila and marga-hootie specials, Negra Modelo and of course that new thing they do, carona –ritas.

I am reminded that I would spend well over 500 on tequila alone for my annual cinco de mayo party. Yes, I was one of THEM. Now, if I hadn’t noticed the ad tonight it would have just slipped by as another day. Well actually, it is just another day sober. No more getting psyched up for the convenient excuse to get drunk on tequila shots.

Let’s everyone make a pact that we will avoid those places on May 5th. Don’t get sucked into the lame excuse to drink. Just like St Pat’s Day, most of the people have no clue why cinco de mayo is celebrated except that everywhere (in America) is advertising marguerite specials. Do your best to steer clear of these places.

For those who commemorate the day for real, I salute you. Congratulations.

I used to pride myself and my love of "dirty" Tequila and hating the expensive stuff..."It's just to pure for me, no bite at all."
Well tomorrow I will not be having either. One Tequila, Two Tequila, Three Tequila NOoooo!!!!
Thanks for the post!

I quit in early December and had to get through Christmas, my birthday and New Year's newly sober. I've got this one.

Couldn't agree with you more, Lbrain. I hate how every "event" is an excuse to get drunk and overeat. The Super Bowl...another prime example. Ugh.

I hate margaritas and tequila anyway. No
Problem getting through Cinco de mayo for me! You're right though...Americans use any excuse to drink! :-/

Always loved margaritas, but never "celebrated" the 5th.

I guess I never needed a holiday as an excuse to drink, I did just fine everyday that ended in y

Cinco de Mayo es mi cumpleaños. I can't think of a better gift than for you all to join LBrain's pact.

I'm in!

I was just thinking about this the other day when I heard an ad on the radio. I wasn't a big Cinco de Mayo celebrant while drinking and certainly not while sober. I did like margaritas but not tequila straight. Certainly not going to make a difference to me now although I'll be off work for the day. Only because I'm actually sick, not nursing a hangover. I feel guilty calling in now.

Thanks Brain for reminding us that holidays don't have to be drinking holidays.

Cinco de Mayo is a total cultural fraud. It's barely recognized in Mexico and, contrary to what people think in America, is not the anniversary of Mexican independence from Spain. It's just another made up Hallmark holiday promoted by the international liquor conglomerates to sell Coronas.

In the past, I've never singled out Cinco de Mayo
as an excuse for a drinking day.
Nor St. Patrick's day.
What for?
Every single day had its own excuse to drink, anyway.
"Holiday" or not.

I guess you and I know totally different people in America. All my friends know that Mexico's Independence Day is in September (the 16th), and that Cinco de Mayo is the date is observed to commemorate the Mexican army's victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862.

If there's one thing Western society is good at, it's coming up with excuses to get plastered.

I was all caught up in Star Wars Day yesterday (May the Fourth be with you) to even register that today was one of those "party" days. My SO used to work at a Mexican restaurant that held an annual Margarita Fiesta with umpteen flavors and a beer tent and a band. Didn't even think about that this year. Sober and clean for today! Lol yes I'm a geek!
