At a conference in New Orleans. I didn't get out until tonight - went to Bourbon Street. At one bar, one of the roaming shooter girls insisted on shoving my face in her bosom, and then tried to forcefully insert an alcohol based shooter in my mouth. I obviously didn't let her, and the second go around some of my co-workers even intervened and yelled at her saying he doesn't drink. At this stage of my sobriety (3+ years), fending her off and avoiding the craving was no big deal. But, I couldn't help but feel a hollow pit in my gut, just thinking about others like me, who maybe would have fallen with the temptation. I was then pretty incensed - it's one thing for my stupidity or my friends to steal my sobriety. But how in God's name can a complete stranger so self empower themselves in another person's life so as to destroy their sobriety? Honestly, how is such a violation of personal space not illegal?

I know the avoiding places like that speech. But - this isn't about temptation, I have been to 100's of bars since I got sober, without ever slipping. This is about selfish, self centered people who genuinely think the world is all about them.

Texas, I'm sorry that happened to you. It's disgusting and is a side of New Orleans that is disappointing, if not entirely surprising. Some years ago, I was in the French Quarter with friends and very narrowly missed being vomited on. Lovely.

I visited family there a couple months ago and greatly enjoyed a visit to Frenchmen Street in the Marigny -- the vibe is so different. The crowds are there for the music. Didn't see any drunk foolishness in the clubs. There's a big family shindig in NO in about six weeks and I cannot wait. Looking forward to returning there and taking in some more of that wonderful atmosphere and music. Contrary to what may be popular opinion, New Orleans can be enjoyed sober!

It's only Bourbon Street that is like that, and the people you see are drunk tourists.

I got hosed and taken to the cleaners for years by the almost nude waitress's on bourbon street. Best to stay away from them kinda places altogether.

Alcohol aside, nothing grates on me more than salespeople that are pushy. And that's about as bad as it gets. Just because I'm a dude doesn't mean I want that.

I am crazy annoyed just hearing about this!!! Wrong in so many ways for someone to literally try to force alcohol onto you. It's assault of your personal space, your sobriety, possibly your religion, maybe your designated driver duties, and just so much more!!!! At this point in my sobriety there is only a chance I would be able to say no to a situation like that. I am so sorry to hear you had to go through that, and congrats on staying sober!!
