Guilt..........

So here's some codependent guilt for you.......

Tomorrow is my 17 year A.A Anniversary.......

My "friend" isn't here for my anniversary after telling me he would be even if he had to fly........

I've put it off in past years for when he would be here, this year I want to take it on the actual day.........

And I'm feeling guilty for doing it.........

Hello Earthworm,

A very deep bow to you on 17 years of sobriety!

Your friend cannot make it, but this should not stop you from celebrating your day on the actual date. Sobriety is what you do for you, right? Would this friend even be in your life if you had not stopped?

Celebrate you on your AA bday, then celebrate again when your 'friend' next visits. Celebrate twice and be done with the guilt.

Yeah, I know of no rule that says you can't celebrate twice. If you mean "celebrate" at your home group or something, then I wouldn't impose on the group to host two celebrations, but nothing says you can't do something special to celebrate in some other way. Go to a different meeting, go out to dinner, whatever. If your friend really is coming from a distance, though, I'd let him know what your plans are. Otherwise he might reasonably assume things will go the way they have in the past.

Oh, and CONGRATS on 17 years!

I suspect, Earthworm, that he would celebrate if you announced you had started drinking again.
I know my own sobriety is a source of considerable grief for my separated mate. He lost his drinking buddy.
