Intro...

I am new to this forum and only discovered it a few days ago.

I am in my mid-40's (male) and have drank too much for most of the past 20 years. Why is that? I'm not entirely sure--some of it is to alleviate loneliness, and it is also a good stress reliever when you have a boss that doesn't like you and a parent that isn't doing well. Those are all excuses I know. If I had a great boss and Mom made a miraculous recovery, I would drink to celebrate those things. So it doesn't really matter....

Most days after work I would come home and have about 4 or 5 beers, while on days off it could be 8--10. Yesterday it was 10. Nothing today so far. I am probably a "functional alcoholic" as the saying goes, but an alcoholic nonetheless.

When I drink, I never have hangovers or blackouts or throw up or anything like that. Sometimes I do have a screaming headache in the morning though. I would never drive while drinking. I drink "responsibly" (as the TV ad says). Yeah, right....Mostly it just feels like a bad habit I've had for a long time that I'm ready to get rid of.

In 2008, I went 50 days with no alcohol and told myself that "proves" I am not an alcoholic. That gave me the green light in my mind to drink again.

So anyway, that is my story. I signed up for the March 2015 class, but will just take it one day at a time. Not gonna worry about 30 days, or 50 days, or a year of sobriety, at least not now. Thanks for reading....I'm looking forward to participating in this forum.

Welcome to SR!

Alcohol has a way to creep in. Kicking it out of my life for good was the only way.

Good luck

Welcome to SR!

Most days after work I would come home and have about 4 or 5 beers, while on days off it could be 8--10.

Yeah, me too. Except after awhile I couldn't get much of a buzz from that amount so I would have a shot of vodka (or two . . . ). I found I could get the buzz I was looking for a lot quicker. However, it was a slippery downhill slope from there.

Thanks to this website and AA those days are behind me!
