SMART vs AA
I'm just curious, and I know it boils down to personal preference: does anyone on here follow the SMART program? I've been doing research on alternatives to AA because I've never been comfortable in meetings sharing my feelings in person and I have a hard time with the "higher power" concept. Does anyone have any input on other programs or on SMART?
A better place to ask your question is in the Secular Connections forum. That is the forum for discussions of alternatives to 12 step recovery SMART, AVRT, CBT and other evidence based tools. The whole 'VS' thing is not an effective way to ask your question though, as it won't give you the information you are looking for. You are likely to lose sight of your original question as the conversation degrades into arguments and defensive posturing. See what you can learn about both, and other recovery tools too, and make the comparisons yourself.
It's not off topic for this forum
I do take FS's point tho that 'vs' is probably not the best way to approach it....the two are not mutually exclusive: I've seen people use personal recovery programmes derived from both.
I hope you'll hear from other SMARTies InMy Blood

By sheer coincidence this was an article on the SR front page:
SMART vs. AA: 8 Major Differences
Basic perhaps but I picked up a few things I didn't know

You might also check out LifeRing - LifeRing. This is a website for Life Ring Secular Recovery, which started in the Bay Area in CA. It branched off from SOS after some "stuff". There are not a lot of local meetings im many areas, but there are some active email lists that are beneficial. It is abstinence based only like AA, and SMART. Research shows that all methods are equally effective or ineffective depending on how you look at it.

I highly recommend making a commitment to yourself to NOT DRINK, NO MATTER WHAT. From there I was able to try on things till I found a good fit. "AVRT Explained" here:Secular Connections - SoberRecovery : Alcoholism Drug Addiction Help and Information helped me a great deal. As for navigating life sober, that is ongoing and I use neither "program" but many elements of SMART are found in our Forums. Best wishes. You may get some snarky comments from the title of your post (vs)--try to disregard the far left AND right. The truth for you will be found by you.
