Starting.........Now!
Hi all,
Let me just preface this with a cliche: I am an alcoholic
Or at least I think I am. I am the kind of person who does not know when they are drunk, has no sensation of being tipsy, and yet craves it. So when I have "just one drink" I think to myself "well, that did nothing, maybe another". And the sensible part of me that decided I wouldn't get drunk tonight is just that little bit weaker from the one drink I have had, just weak enough for the second drink. I'm not sure if that's what every alcoholic feels but to me I never feel tipsy and it was always what I wanted to feel when I tried to just drink enough to have a good night, so I'd keep chugging more drinks until I wandered off wasted or had a complete emotional breakdown Infront of a group of strangers. I have done some very embarassing things when I've been drunk
So that's one reason that I'd call myself an alcoholic - I can't have one without having many. The second reason, I am obese (BMI 32) and that is solely from Alcohol. It stopped me going to the gym, ruined my morning exercise routine and I actually have a good diet so is the sole source of my over intake of calories. If I didn't drink, I could be a healthy person, therefore alcohol is having an unhealthy affect on my life.
Thirdly, it's my stress relief: a bad day = stop off at offie on way home for vodka and 4litres of coke. I can easily chug through 75cl of vodka in one sitting. I'm not sure if that should even be possible.
So, moving on...reasons to quit:
1. I have a very good job and a very nice girlfriend, I don't want to lose either
2. I want to get healthy again (I live in Queensland, being fat is not good in this heat!!)
3. My family has a history of heart disease, including many heart attacks before the age of 40 (I'm currently 27)
4. I want to wake up with "wake up its a beautiful morning" playing in my head for once and not the palpatations and headache which form a new-age drum and bass soundtrack!!
5. It's f*****g expensive to drink. I could go on so many holidays if I gave up drinking!!
6. (This might be too much information) Id like to not have almost permanent diarrhoea and gas making me feel permanently bloated and ruining my sex drive (I warned you about TMi)
So here's to a new beginning, I will update here on this very thread at least once a day for the first week. I've tried giving up before and not taken it seriously but I really do want to this time. Last time I gave up for a week (which was always the intention, I think to prove to myself I wasn't an alcoholic...) I lost a ton of weight so I'm hoping for some quick weight loss rewards that will help with morale.
Why am I posting this? Because this is day one and its 00.15hours - normally alcohol would've helped me to sleep when I went to bed 3 hours ago. Still, at least the insomnia meant I found this site!
Cheers guys

Hi and welcome.
Your self description I think describes alcoholic personalities.
Most don’t/won’t acknowledge the fact and accept we cannot drink in safety and will continue the misery of trying too.
I suggest reading a lot of posts on this forum as most of us didn’t know what we didn’t know. Also consider AA meetingS which have helped millions achieve sobriety.
If in doubt answer the following, honestly.
BE WELL
20 Questions

If you have answered YES to any one of the questions, there is a definite warning that you may be an alcoholic.
If you have answered YES to any two, the chances are that you are an alcoholic.
If you have answered YES to three or more, you are definitely an alcoholic.

Glad you hear you have finally had enough and all six of your reasons are enough motivation to get sober. Make sure you have a plan to deal with the urges to drink. Maybe even go as far as re-reading those six reasons every time you have an urge to drink and posting them on your refrigerator. I wish you well on your recovery.
There is plenty of support here and I give this forum and the people for helping me get through it.

Hey all:
Day 2, so far living sober but not exactly healthier. Substituted 4 cans of energy drink for my usual alcohol fix throughout the day. Not the greatest idea I've ever had but needed something fizzy. Also carb loaded with bad crisps. Today the plan is to try eating healthy as I'm at work all day (was off yesterday which made things tougher). Actually slept OK last night. Feel a bit ill this morning though.
