Today...can't do this by myself
Yep, it's hard. It took me a long time to realize that myself. When you go to your first AA meeting, let the group know that you are a newcomer and that it's your first meeting. I received a ton of support, and experienced a great deal of relief meeting people who had gone through the same things that I was struggling with.

My first meeting all I could say is," I'm Tom I'm an alcoholic and I can't take it any more."I didn't have to say anything else. Those people knew exactly what I meant and how I felt. They had been in my shoes.
And they helped me to learn how to live a sober, productive life- one free of alcohol and with self worth.
Remember that A.A. is based on principals before personalities. People will be people wherever you go. meetings are not the program, the 12 steps are.
Meetings are a great support group. If you don't like the first one try another one.
You are making a good decision. Best wishes.

It takes a real man to realize he needs help. I had my breaking point 4 years ago. Too many drugs too much booze. I was very sick and my health was horrible. I walked into AA and I got a sponsor. I know to be successful you don't have to reinvent the wheel. you just do what successful people do. I began working with a sponsor. I started to practice living one day at a time and eventually I began to live life sober. There is nothing greater than to experience emotions without booze. It is so powerful. It is hard to believe people keep numbing themselves with the booze. I was able to take massive action day in and day out and stay sober. My relationships got better. My work got better. Today I can afford clothes, I am not pooping my pants, and I am not in jail. For those things I am eternally grateful to A.A.
