Keep trying until SOMETHING works.
Keep trying until SOMETHING works.
So yeah...Just past 3 weeks sober again. And well I've been living my life day by day for these weeks. It's easy to get overwhelmed for me otherwise.
Made my commitments and sticking to them.
Work has been driving me mental...Yesterday our backup tape server/drive malfunctioned and wouldn't read any of our data tapes...As the IT guy i'm responsible for the running/completing the backup of each night's business critical information.
So data wasn't backed up last night...I tried everything i could think of to get the drive working again...Powered it off...Re-set the cables...Powered off the computer etc...Yelled and cursed at it...
Came in today...And well started the whole process of getting a replacement drive ordered. They said oh it'll cost $4000 and won't be there for 1 week.
Instant ANXIETY. ...Well that's not good...1 week no backups?...That could be bad.
Then it dawned on me...What hadn't i tried?...Did i miss something obvious?
The tape drive wasn't detecting the tapes correctly...Could it be dirty/smudged etc?...Did i have a cleaning tape for it?
Long story short...I found the cleaning tape/utility and ran it through it's cycles 2 times...And the drive works once again.
Like with my drinking i looked PAST the obvious solution and wasted time/energy on a solution that would have cost time, $, and anxiety for me.
I need to remind myself to slow it down. In life and in work.
Sometimes the answer is right in front of us. If we take a breath and look.
Here's hoping my drives/tapes will run correctly tonight. But that isn't in my immediate control. I leave that up to god though! (From the big book...We had to stop playing god, it didn't work)
Thanks SR.

Well done!
From an IT guy to one, next time, as contingency, if it's a Windows server, you can use the built-in backup utility and backup to an external drive or another server.
If you have a DB on there like SQL, you can setup a backup in SQL manager, output to a drive then pick that file up with your backup.
Yikes, sorry, well done on not drinking!!
