While the cat's away, this mouse will play (but not with alcohol)
As a former solitary binge drinker, my partner going out of town was always a great excuse to get hammered. Add to this the recent home invasion in my neighborhood and my own history, and I’m a bundle of nerves about his impending trip next week.
So, I need a plan, one on two fronts:
How to feel safer
• A neighbor (police officer) kindly offered to check through our homes in the neighborhood and give us some tips on how to make them more secure. I was pleased to learn that the door of our old farmhouse is rock solid (they don’t make them like they used to in 1890, apparently),but he had some good suggestions for locks on a few windows and some lighting. Partner has offered to make those improvements before leaving on Wed.
• Told several neighbors that partner will be out of town. They agreed to keep an extra eye out.
• Friend who knows about my history has told me that I can come and stay at her place at any point in the week, and to phone or text at any time. She is also going to spend the night here at least one night (we both have mss. Deadlines, so we’ll make a little writing retreat out of it).
--Going to let the dogs (even the big girl) sleep on the bed vs. in the crates. Anyone would have to get through these two before me, and it wouldn't be pretty
How to make sure I don’t drink:
• I have been on an organizing kick around the house these days, and have a few projects that I’ll work on in the evenings while my partner is gone. Make up drawer, here I come!
• At least one night I’m going to get pizza from my favorite place and watch as many cooking shows as I want ☺.
• A friend is going to come over one weekend day to do a marathon cooking session (we’re both trying to get a bunch of good meals in our freezer for busy nights).
• I’ll be extra vigilant and make sure I don’t wear myself out at work.
• Will do some marathon gardening, including planting five new bare root roses. I love to garden and never seem to have enough time to do it.
So that’s the plan!

Good idea, too, about SR: I will add to my list that I will visit here frequently and promise myself that I will post if I feel any urges.
Matilda, that's the way to succeed, and I'm sure you will because you're putting a lot of thought into your time.
I live in a neighbourhood where there is a lot of break-in type petty crime. I've set up my security so that if anyone wants to get in they will have to make a lot of noise and mess to do it, which gives me some time to call the police (or freeze with fear!). Most home invasions are done through someone answering the door, so be careful on that count.
