Wow, what a fantastic article. I agree with many aspects of it and am fascinated by the Rat Park experiments.
If you make the link to 12 step programs, which offer a sense of community and shared purpose amongst members as well as connection with spirit/God, it makes sense that these programs would address (for many addicts) the deficits that he's describing.
I also found the ending very moving, in terms of his shifting attitude toward the addict boyfriend.
I do believe that meaning and connection are the antidotes to addiction. My alcohol abuse has been almost exclusively connected to loneliness and isolation.
