Smile The power of words....

I was at a birthday meeting last night, listening to a woman share who was taking 27 years of sobriety.

She is a writer, and she mentioned something about believing in the power of words.

One slight change in her way of "speaking" was instead of waking up and thinking/saying "What do I have to do today?" she now wakes up and says/thinks "What do I GET to do today?"

She said this one small change, with persisted practice and effort, has made a huge difference in her life.

I tried in this morning, and I gotta say. It started my day off right.

What do YOU get to do today??

I get to work at my job for a few hours this morning, get some stuff cleaned up.
I get to leave early because it's NYE!
I get to go to the gym and work out with my personal trainer.
I get to go see a movie with my man.
I get to go watch the fireworks and bring in a sober 2015!!!

Love this post!! What do I get to do today?
- Wake up at the crack of dawn with my 3 year old
- Cook a nice dinner tonight
- Watch movies all day with my daughter
- Thank the cosmos for not being hung over

I plan on making today a great day!

I sort of did this a while back when I was feeling overwhelmed with responsibilities and the routine of them. It is so easy to get into a rut. Sometimes these 'ruts' are actually blessings in disguise.

"I have to go to work" became "I am able to earn a living to support my family".

"Dear God, more laundry?!" became "There are people in my life; I am not lonely; the people I love created this laundry".

"We have gone through ANOTHER box of diapers" became "I have a beautiful, healthy baby who pees and poops and laughs and smiles".

yeah..... this is fantastic.

I use a similar re-framing to help strengthen my sobriety.

Rather than focus on "not being able to" drink - I shift to all of the things I am ABLE to do BECAUSE I CHOOSE not to drink.

It's a seemingly simple, seemingly obvious difference..... but it took me a year and a half relapse and most of a lifetime of struggling with addiction to get such a simple notion.

Or all the things I am able to do today - because I am not hungover!

Pretty easy list to come up with there!
