Hi pumpkinny. It's my first sober Christmas, too And I seriously think that we are free to celebrate the holidays any way we choose to, does not have to do anything with bars. Or we are also free not to celebrate it at all, if that seems more appealing. I'm spending this particular Christmas abroad visiting family, but if I stayed in NYC, I would probably just enjoy a few days relaxing going to the museums, movies, maybe a concert, things like that. Pretty much stuff I like to do in general on weekends or when I have some days off. There is no requirement to follow, or even think about, any tradition, especially not ones involving bars, really.
It's already quite a difference to be sober during our first holiday season, no? Why not also do the whole thing differently in terms of activities?

My first sober christmas as well. I can do it I keep on saying to myself. It makes you wonder why alcohol is so importantly associated with holidays.. It is almost imbedded in our brains that you have to drink to truly enjoy your holidays properly.. It does not need to be so.. Merry sober Christmas everybody!!!

I just came across this and wanted to share. It's a Christian perspective...so atheists and other faiths..please avert your eyes. I mean no disrespect. I just like the sentiment...
"Either way, we use all the sugar and booze to stuff down our discomfort because our unease and sadness and fear aren’t supposed to show up on Christmas, right? If they do, if these feelings arise- we must be doing something wrong, right? Because everyone else is HAPPY today, right? Because everything’s supposed to be shiny and perfect and happy and bright, right?
Ha! That is hilarious! No. No, NO! None of that is true. God never suggests that holy days will be easy and shiny and bright. Commercials tell us that. The folks who sell the shiny and bright stuff tell us that. If the original Christmas story taught us anything, it’s that holy days can be brutal indeed, complete with rude innkeepers and tired donkeys and nothing to put your baby in but rags. In fact and forever and ever amen – Holydays have been marked not by SHINY but by HARD."

Happy Festivus!!
I think I probably strike a fine balance between both realities, Xmas has it's nostalgia and some people are in a better mood for a few weeks, but on the other hand I don't take it all too seriously.
Everyone to their own!!
