Weight loss & early sobriety
Weight loss & early sobriety
Has anyone lost weight during early sobriety? I'm 19 days in and I've lost almost 9lbs. I'm slowly getting back into working out, so it can't be the exercise. I'm freaking out just a little bit, so I would like to know if others experienced sort of dramatic weight loss (it is for me). Thanks!
PS: I see my Dr tomorrow

I lost 3lbs in the first week of sobriety. It is very possible your body is getting rid of bloat & you are no longer taking in the empty calories alcohol has. It's still a good thing to get yourself checked out.
I lost 35 pounds in all about the first six months of sobriety. You have to consider all of those empty calories you have been pumping into your body and basically that is a huge problem because your body doesn't know what to do with it. Also you're constantly dehydrated so water retention is a factor as well.
I just celebrated a year sober December 15 and I have more energy now than ever no mood swings no depression and most of all no real cravings for alcohol at all. To be perfectly honest I tried to drink a beer and all it did was make me feel bad but I've had the same reaction to some of the garbage food I was eating as well. It's almost like I have a higher state of consciousness about what I'm putting into my body. Especially now that I can think straight. Best of luck to you but it is good advice to keep your doctor involved in your recovery process.

I lost a couple of pounds in 1 month even though I was drinking virgin piņa coladas almost every day. We put tons of calories into our bodies through alcohol. The question is: how do you feel? Good your are seeing you Dr.
I've lost about 7 lbs in the last 60 days. I think part of it for me is the increase in anxiety that has ramped up my metabolism. Not consuming those empty calories helps too. Also I read alcohol slows down your metabolism so when you take it away things can speed back up.
I feel great so far. I'm just concerned with the rapid weight loss. I'm a weight lifter and have stopped heavy training 3 weeks ago because of my drinking issues. I'm slowly getting back into the routine again. I'm convinced I've lost muscle, so I hope when I'm back into the swing of things, my appetite will increase.
While I haven't lost that much weight (~ 3 lbs), I have lost inches to where all my clothes are baggy and I am already fairly skinny. I have always worked out though.
It may be the combo of working out and less empty calories from the alcohol for you.

I lift as well and interestingly my first day back in the gym after a month long binge I set a new PR on my bench.. So don't sell yourself short just yet.
As for the weight loss, yeah... The first 7 days of sobriety my body flushed itself out big time. It's finding it's balance again, just keep chugging that water.
Enjoy your workout!

I lost 12 lbs in my first month or so of sobriety. Part of it was loss of calories and part was malabsorption due to alcoholic gastritis. With a doctor's help I got my gastritis under control and my weight loss stabilized. My advice - don't freak out, weight loss is normal, but make sure you are seeing a doctor just to rule out anything that might be off balance in your body because of alcohol abuse.
